Published on: July 15, 2024Welcome, everyone! Today, the old jarhead, Dennis Guzik, is back with some great career advice, focusing on an important concept in workplace dynamics—silos.
As a retired "jarhead, I offer my experiences and advice to help you improve your career. It's my firm belief that you should follow your passions instead of staying in a job that brings you no satisfaction.
For instance, I once met a waiter who dreamt of becoming an electrician but continued to work as a waiter out of convenience and fear of change. This is a perfect example of why setting goals and making actionable plans for achieving your dream career is important.
My mission is to guide individuals in finding a career that fits their skills and life aspirations. My book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," is a comprehensive guide designed for those unsure about their career path and looking for direction. Together, we can turn your dreams into reality by taking decisive steps towards a fulfilling career.
As someone who has navigated the often complex world of career transitions, I can assure you that the journey to your dream job is both possible and rewarding. Here are some key points to keep in mind on your quest:

Key Points:
In this episode of the career advice podcast, titled "Understanding Your Own Personal Limitations," the host dives deep into the importance of recognizing and managing your personal and professional limitations. This episode is especially beneficial for young professionals, career starters, and ambitious individuals aiming to navigate their career paths effectively.
In this episode, Dennis provides essential career advice focused on understanding and navigating limitations in the workplace. He introduces a concept adapted from the Marine Corps planning process, defining limitations as a combination of constraints (things you must do) and restraints (things you cannot do). Using relatable examples, such as homeowners association rules and professional scenarios, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing and asking about these limitations to avoid trouble and maintain a successful career. The episode concludes with a teaser for the next topic on personal limitations and a call to action to check out his book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life."
Published on: May 18, 2024Dennis is a Marine veteran and former corporate executive who shares valuable career advice. He guarantees that following his advice will lead to a better career
• In honor of Mother's Day, he reflects on lessons learned from his mother and how they relate to career success.
• Lesson 1: Cooking - You don't have to be a master chef or have a big budget to eat well, just be organized and stick to a routine.
• Lesson 2: Organization - His mother was able to host large family gatherings with only one oven and pen and paper organization skills; use electronic tools available now for even more efficient organization.
• Lesson 3: Don't whine - His tough mother taught him not to complain about tough situations; either solve the problem or learn to live with it.
Published on: May 13, 2024Dennis Guzik is back for another episode of the Be the Ultimate podcast
• He always tells his listeners what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear
• Dennis was watching the first round of the NFL draft and noticed a pattern among the families of chosen players
• These players have worked relentlessly and put in countless hours of training to reach their goals
• In the Marine Corps, hard work and discipline are essential for success and promotion to leadership positions
• While movies may depict super-powered individuals, in real life hard work and dedication lead to success
• If you want to get promoted in your career, you must be willing to put in extra effort and constantly learn new things about your profession
• This mindset can set you apart from your coworkers and help you progress in your career faster
• Remember, careers are a competition and it's important to always strive for improvement
• As Vince Lombardi once said, "The man at the top of the mountain didn't just fall there"
Published on: May 5, 2024The Old Jarhead is back with career advice on Non-Compete Agreements.
• Non-compete agreements are contracts that restrict an employee's ability to work for a competitor after leaving a job.
• Employers use them to protect their trade secrets and investments in employees, but they can limit job opportunities for workers.
• The US Federal Trade Commission recently ruled that non-compete agreements are no longer legal, sparking debate and potential legal challenges.
• The Old Jarhead has experience on both sides of the issue and offers his thoughts on the ruling.
• He believes the FTC exceeded its boundaries, and the impact may be minimal for junior and mid-level employees but could be detrimental for small businesses with valuable trade secrets.
• Ultimately, lawyers and lobbyists will likely profit from this decision while it is being sorted out.
• Business owners shouldn't panic yet, and employees still constrained by non-compete agreements shouldn't celebrate prematurely.
• To keep growing professionally, he recommends checking out his podcast, "Be the Ultimate," and giving his book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," a read.
Published on: April 25, 2024Dennis Guzik is the host of the Be the Ultimate podcast, where he shares valuable career advice.
• One of the most common questions he is asked as a former corporate leader is whether to go to grad school.
• The first factor to consider is if grad school is necessary and if it will benefit your career.
• If the answer is yes, then it's important to think about whether you enjoy the field of study and can handle the time and cost.
• While going to grad school while working full time may take longer, it provides a steady income and potential employer support.
• Full-time grad school offers a more immersive experience but requires financial investment without a salary.
• Another option is going straight to grad school after obtaining a bachelor's degree, which may be beneficial with more experience under your belt.
• Ultimately, the decision should be based on personal preference and weighing the factors of liking the field, needing it for your career, and being able to handle the commitment.
Published on: April 19, 2024In his insightful podcast episode, the seasoned career coach, known as the Old Jarhead, emphasizes the importance of having the right attitude during job interviews. With experience spanning the Marine Corps, corporate America, and career coaching, he offers a fresh take on navigating the interview process.
According to him, a positive attitude can trump skills at the interview stage. He reasons that by the time you're called for an interview, your skills have already been assessed favorably; what sets candidates apart is their enthusiasm for the role and the company. Instead of rehashing your resume, the interview is your opportunity to showcase your interest in the company and the position, demonstrating that you've done your homework.
Positive attitude aside, he also advises showing you're thinking long-term with questions about career progression within the company and its future prospects. However, he cautions against seeming too needy as it may suggest that you're likely to jump ship at the next best offer.
His final takeaway? Bring a good attitude to your interview, and it could lead to more job offers. And for further wisdom on finding the perfect job, he suggests picking up his book, "Find a Job Fits Your Life," claiming it could be a game-changer in your career search.
Boost your interview game and discover more pearls of wisdom by tuning into the Old Jarhead's podcast and checking out his book for comprehensive guidance.

The old jarhead is back with great career advice.
• The advice is guaranteed to work and is based on the BAMCIS concept: Begin planning, arrange for the reconnaissance, make the reconnaissance, complete the order, issue the order, and supervise.
• This concept was taught at the beginning of his Marine Corps career and can be applied to any job or situation.
• Begin planning by setting aside time to think about what needs to be done.
• Arrange for the reconnaissance by talking to other people who may be involved.
• Make the reconnaissance by gathering all necessary information.
• Complete the order by delegating responsibilities to team members.
• Issue the order by clearly communicating tasks and expectations.
• Supervise and make yourself available for guidance and help as needed.
• BAMCIS can be helpful in a variety of situations and should be customized to fit your specific circumstances.

Published on: March 24, 2024When preparing for an interview, presentation is key:
Remember, interviews are as much about delivering your message as they are about the content of the message itself. Stand tall, speak clearly, and let your preparation pave the pathway to success. Go get that job!
Published on: February 2, 2024Dennis discusses two contradictory findings regarding working remotely or in-office during Covid.
Companies that force employees back into the office see lower morale and higher turnover. However, remote workers were promoted 31% less frequently.
The first piece of advice is to decide what you want from your life and job - promotions or remote work. Choose based on your life goals, not just your job's demands. This may mean parting ways if they conflict.
The second advice is to have an open dialogue with your boss. Explain your situation and thinking. Often, a compromise can be found that satisfies both your life needs and the business's, but this requires communication.
Not all situations can be resolved, but communication is key to finding potential solutions the speaker may not have considered. Getting everyone's needs met leads to the best outcome.

· He discusses focusing on the first step rather than feeling overwhelmed by the journey ahead. Taking things one step at a time allows steady progress up the "staircase" toward one's goals.
· Guzik recommends having a plan but concentrating solely on the immediate next step. Getting each subsequent step done will lead to the top of the staircase more quickly than worrying about future challenges.

Dennis Guzik, The Old Jarhead, gives career advice to new leaders who have just been promoted.
New leaders should treat leadership like any other skill that requires lifelong learning. Suggests studying Marine Corps leadership principles online and reading books on leadership from recommended reading lists.
Finding a mentor, either formally or informally, is essential for getting advice on how things are done specifically in their organization. The relationship should be respected with prepared questions.
As the new boss, respect should be shown to former peers who are now direct reports. Their input should be sought while remembering the final decision responsibility. Tact is important to lead successfully in this difficult situation.

Published on: January 12, 2024· Dennis Guzik discussed defining small successes and focusing on achievable goals to measure progress.
· Doing what you love is not enough; one must also be good at it and ensure there is a market for it.
· Admitting what you do not know and seeking information is better than bluffing.
· Sharing information with others strengthens teams and prevents problems caused by withholding critical details.
· Plans should be suitable, feasible, and acceptable to determine if they can realistically accomplish the goals.
· Publicly thanking others builds rapport and recognition for their contributions.
· Dressing professionally commands more respect and avoids missing opportunities due to an unpolished appearance.
· Creating contingency plans called "branches and sequels" prepares for unexpected issues. Something being common or popular is not justification if it is unwise or against policy, rules, or principles.
Published on: December 30, 2023Dennis Guzik discusses his four f's for submitting a resume: fire, follow up, file, and forget.
The first step is to "fire it off" by sending in the resume as soon as possible after becoming aware of an open position.
The second step is to "follow up" within a couple of days by contacting the hiring manager or HR to confirm they received the resume and asking if they have any other questions.
The third step is to "file it" by systematically organizing all application materials and follow-up notes for future reference when applying for other roles.
The final step is to "forget it" and move on to pursuing new opportunities rather than obsessively waiting for a response, as many job postings may not result in an actual hire.
