Passing The Torch with Martin Foster

Welcome to Passing The Torch, a personal development podcast that’s about the journey, not just the destination.

This show is a conversation with people who inspire me — thought leaders, entrepreneurs, athletes, authors, and others who are constantly evolving and learning about themselves. I’m not pretending to have it all figured out, and that’s what makes this podcast different. As I navigate my own personal growth and discover new tools, insights, and stories that are helping me, I’m bringing you along for the ride.

I believe that when it comes to self-improvement, we don’t always need to hear from someone who has already "arrived" at their ideal self. Instead, we can find power in connecting with people who are in the trenches alongside us, figuring things out as they go. Passing The Torch is an opportunity for both of us to learn, grow, and share in real-time.

Every episode, I sit down with individuals from all walks of life — from CEOs and best-selling authors to Special Forces Operators, friends, and elite athletes — and we dive deep into the lessons they’ve learned, the obstacles they’ve overcome, and the wisdom they’ve gained. Along the way, I’ll be sharing my own experiences and insights from my personal development journey.

Whether you’re someone who’s looking for guidance or simply enjoy hearing raw, honest stories of transformation, Passing The Torch offers something for everyone. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about sharing what we’ve learned and helping each other move forward.

Join me on this adventure. Let's pass the torch together.

Ed Latimore is a best-selling author, former professional heavyweight boxer, and competitive chess player. His writing focuses on self-improvement and a practical approach to stoic philosophy.

-

Quick Episode Summary:

Ed Latimore discusses resilience, self-improvement, boxing, and overcoming adversity.

#90 - Michelle 'MACE' Curran - How to Turn Fear into Fuel

Send us a text

Meet Michelle "Mace" Curran, former Air Force Thunderbird pilot, keynote speaker, and author.

The conversation kicks off with Michelle sharing her excitement about the upcoming release of her first nonfiction book, The Flip Side: How to Invert Your Perspective and Turn Fear into Your Superpower.

She explains how the book, infused with lessons and stories from her 13 years flying fighter jets, aims to help readers transform fear into a tool for growth and resilience.

-

Key takeaways include:

Flip Your Fear: Michelle’s new book, The Flip Side, is rooted in the idea of reframing fear. Instead of trying to “turn off” fear, she encourages leaning into it—because growth often happens at the edges of our comfort zones. Small, bold choices add up over time!

Normalize Doubt: Even at the top, imposter syndrome is real. Michelle emphasizes separating our inner critic from our true abilities, reframing negative self-talk, and recognizing that even the highest performers have doubts—they just don’t let it keep them from showing up.

Relatability Drives Impact: Whether inspiring kids through her children’s books or adults with leadership lessons, Michelle’s authenticity and willingness to share both the triumphs and the fears makes her story relatable—and that’s where true impact lies.

Send us a text

Roughly 1.25% of the Air Force hold the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. It’s already a tough milestone to achieve.

Tiffany Zaloudek is someone who did just that and made even more history recently by becoming the first female survival, evasion, resistance, escape (SERE) specialist to earn the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force.

SERE training is one of the most rigorous programs in the military, designed to prepare Airmen for survival in extreme conditions, evading capture, resisting interrogation, and escaping captivity.

Although not the first female SERE specialist, when she earned her beret in 2007, she broke an eight-year dry spell in which no women had graduated from the specialized training course. Reflecting on her initial recruitment, she remembers her recruiter handing her a SERE brochure with no women in it.

Her career is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and impact on SERE training and culture, inspiring countless Airmen.

Tiffany now holds the highest enlisted rank, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of female service members in elite and challenging roles.

Ep 30: Tips from and for a Military Child

Send us a text

Background: April is the Month of the Military Child.

According to Defense.gov, Military families move every two to three years on average, and military children change schools an average of six to nine times from the start of kindergarten to their high school graduation. This year an estimated 30 percent of military service members will move to a new installation.

Each year   , April is set aside as a military child appreciation month, officially known as the Month of the Military Child. With its creation in the mid-1980s, the Pentagon and other military support organizations and agencies use the month to recognize military kids for their sacrifice and bravery on the Homefront.

There are over 1.6 million military children serving alongside our nation’s service members.

The term "military brat" is a badge of pride worn by generations of kids who traveled the world with their parents, moving into adulthood with the knowledge that they have the strength to handle anything. Military children deal with separations, deployments, frequent moves and even their parents' injuries as part of the life they were born into or entered with their families.

Passing The Torch Presents Black Then with Charles "Chief" Anderson

Send us a text

Summary - Black Then

A history podcast from Passing The Torch Podcast Network.

Join Martin Foster and a rotation of guest hosts to celebrate and uplift the talents of African Americans throughout military history. Tune in to hear a quick synopsis of heralded and unheralded patriots.

A world-famous flier before World War II, Chief Anderson became the first African American to earn a commercial pilot license. In 1940 the Tuskegee Institute hired him as its chief flight instructor to develop its pilot training program. The U.S. Army Air Corps awarded Tuskegee the contract to provide primary flight training in February 1941.

Charles Alfred Anderson, often called the “Father of Black Aviation” was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia suburb, on February 9, 1907.  His parents were Janie and Iverson Anderson. Charles Anderson earned the name “Chief” because he was the most experienced African American pilot before coming to Tuskegee Army Air Field in 1940.  He had amassed 3,500 hours of flight which prompted most of his contemporaries and students to call him by that name as a sign of their respect for his accomplishments.  Anderson was also the chief flight instructor for all cadets and flight instructors at Tuskegee, Alabama during World War II.

After World War II, Chief Anderson continued to provide flight instruction at Moton Field, which remains an active airport and is the location of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.

Passing The Torch Presents Black Then with Crispus Attucks

Send us a text

Summary - Black Then

A history podcast from Passing The Torch Podcast Network.

Join Martin Foster and a rotation of guest hosts to celebrate and uplift the talents of African Americans throughout military history. Tune in to hear a quick synopsis of heralded and unheralded patriots.

What has been pieced together paints a picture of a young man who showed an early skill for buying and trading goods. He seemed unafraid of the consequences of escaping the bonds of slavery. Historians have theorized that Attucks was the focus of an advertisement in a 1750 edition of the Boston Gazette in which a white landowner offered to pay 10 pounds for the return of a young runaway enslaved person.

Attucks, however, managed to escape for good, spending the next two decades on trading ships and whaling vessels coming in and out of Boston. He also found work as a rope maker.

  • Fast forwarding, As British control over the colonies tightened, tensions escalated between the colonists and British soldiers. Attucks was one of those directly affected by the worsening situation. Seamen like Attucks constantly lived with the threat they could be forced into the British navy, while back on land, British soldiers regularly took part-time work away from colonists.
  • On March 2, 1770, a fight erupted between a group of Boston rope makers and three British soldiers. The conflict was ratcheted up three nights later when a British soldier looking for work reportedly entered a Boston pub, only to be greeted by furious sailors, one of whom was Attucks.
  • The details regarding what followed are a source of debate, but that evening, a group of Bostonians approached a guard in front of the customs house and started taunting him. The situation quickly escalated. When a contingent of British redcoats came to the defense of their fellow soldier, more angry Bostonians joined the fracas, throwing snowballs and other items at the troops.

Attucks was one of those at the front of the fight amid dozens of people, and when the British opened fire he was the first of five men killed. His murder made him the first casualty of the American Revolution. Quickly becoming known as the Boston Massacre, the episode further propelled the colonies toward war with the British.

Accomplishments and Legacy

Attucks became a martyr. His body was transported to Faneuil (like Daniel) Hall, where he and the others killed in the attack were laid in state. City leaders waived segregation laws in the case and permitted Attu

Ep. 22: Resilience Tips from a Military Child

Send us a text

Each year, April is set aside as a military child appreciation month, officially known as the Month of the Military Child. With its creation in the mid-1980s, the Pentagon and other military support organizations and agencies use the month to recognize military kids for their sacrifice and bravery on the homefront.

Because purple is a color used to represent all military services, the theme "Purple Up" is used over the course of the month.

Enjoy!

Ep. 19: Simple Guiding Truth on a Historic Path

Send us a text

Summary: On this episode of Passing the Torch, Host Martin Foster introduces someone who understands deeply that we ignore history at our peril - Matt Ziemann, which is why the conversation in this episode of Passing the Torch is so robust. A love of history cultivated early in his life has been a guiding light throughout a remarkable career. The discussion touches on the many ways in which history gives context and how understanding decision-making from an experiential point of view can completely change the way we judge others. Enjoy this fun conversation, which includes everything from interesting fun facts about the Battle of Britain to what combo of historical figures would make for the best dinner party. You’ll also find out what popular adventure character (Hint: Indy, for short) might make the best model on which to base Matt’s life story!

Key Takeaways:

  • The big picture: Belief that history is important to good leadership and decision-making
  • Person in history who was inspiring
  • Sharing a simple, guiding truth: We can choose to learn from our own mistakes or learn from what others can teach us through experiences they’ve already had.
  • History provides a template for the many ways in which human decision-making and motivation intersect.
  • A project interviewing legendary pilots as a kid gave Matt a window into the humanity and tactical brilliance behind the airmen he idolized.
  • Realizing that everyone has a story set Matt on the path uncovering the real story behind notable aviation figures, starting with Robin Olds, a Vietnam era “triple ace” fighter pilot who agreed to be interviewed as did many others.
  • Thoughts about two historical figures whose critical decisions were made based on a depth of knowledge about mistakes made in the past: Dwight D. Eisenhower and Robin Olds. Both were committed historians with a tremendous grasp of military campaigns through the ages.
  • If Matt could time travel back to witness any moment in all of history he would be most interested to witness the crucifixion of Jesus; in terms of air power history, he would most like to revisit the Battle of Britain.
  • Significance of the Battle of Britain and how it’s relevant to modern air campaigns.
  • Three dinner guests from all of history:
    • Jesus Christ
    • Dwight D. Eisenhower
    • Robin Olds

Ep. 15: David Marquet Turn The Ship Around

Send us a text

As the Captain of a nuclear submarine, David Marquet created Intent-based Leadership. He is a nationally recognized speaker and authored the Amazon bestseller Turn the Ship Around.

Overcoming the obstacle that restricts leaders from admitting that they don’t know something can be very difficult. David attributes this to leaders often thinking that leadership is a theoretical skill and provides a comparison that simplifies the type of skill that it really is.

People learn more from failure than they do from success. David shares some of the failures that have shaped him into who he is today and reflects on what he learned from them. We also hear about the two types of ego that are competing inside of us whenever we are put under pressure.

BIO:

David Marquet (MAR-KAY) was assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe, then ranked last in retention and operational standing. He “turned his ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This revolutionary approach not only took the Santa Fe from “worst to first” in the rankings, but also created more subsequent leaders than any other submarine. Stephen R. Covey called the Santa Fe “the most empowering organization [he’d] ever seen” and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.

Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time.

David Marquet is here today to deliver the powerful message that in highly effective organizations, leadership is not for the select few at the top; he will tell you how he and the crew of Santa Fe developed a way to create leaders at every level.

Ep. 11: Heath Trepanier-Resilience is making mistakes and coming back

Send us a text

Heath Trepanier- Resilience is making mistakes and coming back from them

In January of 2017, US Air Force Technical Sergeant Heath Trepanier (“Trep”) was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer when a cantaloupe-sized tumor was found in his abdomen. He continues to exceed the doctors’ expectations and was recently able to travel to Hawaii for an Air Force Wounded Warrior event.

Trep has a very realistic, but optimistic outlook on his life.  His illness has provided him with a new perspective of life and taught him to be resilient. Celeste Headlee-How to have a good conversation

One of the many advantages of social media is that it connects the world.  However, in a world where everyone is accessible, why are people so isolated and afraid to talk?

Ep. 7: Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force-Attitude Reflects Leadership

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force-Attitude Reflects Leadership

Chief Master Sergeant of the US Air Force (CMSAF), Kaleth Wright, is the 18th and current CMSAF. Though Chief Wright’s judgment in football teams may be unfortunate, the loyalty he shows to the Dallas Cowboys echoes his commitment to the Airmen under his command and his desire to see them thrive.

Chief Wright would be the first to tell you that behind his successful career, stand a series of failures that propelled him to persevere, develop the compassion, and sincerity that allow him to represent the highest enlisted level of leadership in the US Air Force today.

CMSAF Wright has not forgotten where he came from.  As a result, CMSAF Wright has applied the mentorship he received along the way by utilizing emotional intelligence and wisdom to lead. He aims to develop relationships with the Airmen under his authority by taking an interest in their lives.  This ACTION STYLE of leadership is only possible when a leader is willing to have a positive influence and talk with those under their guidance.

Chief Wright naturally sees the good in people and has repeatedly seen the mutual benefit in investing in them to help them achieve their goals. The leader sets the tone for his people, and as the classic movie “Remember the Titans” so wisely put it: Attitude reflects leadership.

Chief Wright is a lifelong learner and is committed to deliberate personal development in a number of ways.  Examples include reading a couple of books a week and listening to podcasts during his work commute. His current top three book recommendations are: (1) “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, (2) “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, and (3) “As A Man Thinketh” by James Allen.

Quotes:

We cannot stop the evolution of life. Our choice is to evolve with it, which feels great and when we fight it, it's fruitless.

By knowing who we are, we know how to grow our business, we know how to create a culture. If we're evolving ourselves, everyone around us is growing too.

You can't be a great leader without failing. In order to lead you have to take risks.

Failure is critical to growing confidence.
