We are going to get into all the things! We are also going to spotlight mil spouses killing it in their careers and how they did it.

Here is it, the raw and real of a full DITY PCS in real time. I recorded this episode the day we loaded our truck and started our drive, so you get the true unfiltered version!
In this episode, we share our experiences of hiring movers and the logistics of our move from Colorado to Washington.
We discuss the benefits of booking directly with a moving company versus using Hire a Helper, our preparations and challenges including packing, disassembling furniture, and space management in the moving truck.
We also touch on the emotional aspect of a military move, such as the difficulty of being separated from family and the desire to get settled quickly in a new home.
Additionally, we provide tips on planning routes, weighing vehicles, and the importance of taking tasks off your plate to reduce stress during a PCS season.

In this episode, I share my recent activities, including a leadership course and a family vacation, and announces a temporary shift to a bi-weekly podcast schedule due to an upcoming PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move to Washington state.
The main focus of the episode is on providing military parents with ten practical tips for maintaining consistency, establishing routines, and supporting their children through the challenges of deployments and frequent relocations.
The tips range from establishing routines, open communication, creating familiar spaces, staying connected during deployments, involving children in planning, utilizing support networks, maintaining discipline, celebrating traditions, focusing on quality time, to practicing self-care.
These strategies are aimed at helping military families navigate the complexities of military life while nurturing resilience, stability, and well-being in their children.

Believe it or not, this is one of the most googled questions for military spouses! And the answer is NO, military spouses do not get TSA PreCheck for free.
We talk about who does get it free, how you can get the fees waived and is it worth it?
We also talk about pre-boarding when they call for military both when traveling with your military member and on you own, and the different airline policies. And I share an embarrassing story of when it can go wrong.

We are about 6 months out from our 9th military move and second full DITY or do it yourself move.
Honestly at this point its the mental load that is killing me. The awful in-between I call it where you have "soft" orders, not hard orders, so you really can't do anything but stress about where your going to live and what school your kids are going to go to.
I think its important to share all the good, bad and ugly of our lifestyle and todays topic is definitely of the ugly side, but not to fear! Its not all doom and gloom, I also share some cool tips I've picked up from other mil spouses for packing and be sure to check out my Amazon moving list!

We are getting into all things housing today. One of the first things we look for when we get new orders is where are we going to live?
We talk about the benefits of living on base but the downsides of long waitlists and poor quality homes.
We discuss BAH rates, or housing allowance. How do they come up with the numbers they do? What is BAH supposed to cover and other common questions.
Finally we talk about purchasing a home and if and when that might be the right decision for your family.
Hit me up and let me know if you have been able to live within BAH! You are the unicorns!

Today we are talking to Chelsey who is a military travel card hacker. She has figured out how to use really high end credit cards, like the American Express Platinum card which has a really high annual fee, but it is waived for active duty military and their spouses.
DISCLAIMER!!! PLEASE be responsible with your credit cards! If you know you are an overspender, maybe this isn’t the right path for you. Do your research and make sure to PAY OFF your cards IN FULL every month!
There are SO many benefits to having a card like this. Chelsey tells us how to maximize your points and how to transfer them to partner airlines.
Chelsey recommends a site called Thrifty Traveller to find deals. The caveat is you really need to be flexible with your travel to get a lot of the really great deals.
9 times out of 10, it will be better to transfer your credit card points to an airline or hotel vice booking through the card. Your points go further when you transfer typically.
We talk about different hotel and resort options available to military and some unique reward programs that come with free nights.
What about your credit score? Isn’t it bad to have too many credit cards or too many new accounts? Chelsey answers all of your questions!

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell was a fascinating listen on Audible.
I thought I was going to learn how to talk to new people, which is a great skill to nurture as a military spouse. But what it turned out to be was a case study in how we get it wrong.
Malcolm talks about stories from Chamberlin meeting with Hitler to the infiltration of the CIA from Cuban spies to the suicides of Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton.
From the Bernie Madoff scheme to the Sandusky trial. How do we get it so wrong sometimes?
I give you my abbreviated version and biggest take-aways from reading.

Today we are talking about holiday travel. Specifically if your family doesn’t live close by and you are getting pressure or guilt tripped into visiting over the holidays, when maybe that isn’t what you want to do.
I highly encourage you to be selfish! Think about your CORE family, those living in your house and who move with you every time you PCS. What do they want to do? Maybe it isn’t traveling to family, maybe its a bucket list trip for the area you are in, or maybe its not traveling at all!
What can we do to make it less hectic when we do decide to travel home to family?
Travel advice:
Follow @camoflagueandperks on IG for great military travel hacking ideas!
If you’re stationed overseas over the holidays, could you embrace the local culture where you are? Deep dive into local traditions and learn and experience as much as you can, and maybe even find new traditions to carry on in your family.
We talk about handling the holidays if your significant other is deployed. Really diving into your local community and putting yourself out there, even when its not comfortable.
There are a lot of different technologies that can be helpful when you are geographically separated!
How can we help our kids navigate the holidays if they have a deployed parent?
Holidays can be really stressful and lonely with our military lifestyle. I encourage you to do what YOU want to do, and not worry about extended family!

We are rounding out our Holiday Mil Spouse Shop series with Emily from Thriving Homefront.
Emily is a Navy wife and mom of 2 littles who was looking for a little more after leaving her teaching career to stay home with their kids.
Like so many of us do while our spouses are deployed, Emily picked up a new hobby and taught herself to sew on a sewing machine.
She started to make headbands for her and her daughters and people kept asking about them, so she opened up a shop and took off running!
Emily had a lot of success early on with being connected with a subscription box company and talks about the trials and tribulations of wholesale orders and volume and difficulty finding material during the pandemic.
Thriving Homefront has lots of holiday themed items for you to check out! Hair accessories make great teacher gifts and stocking stuffers!
We then shift gears quite a bit to talk about potential PCSing, and orders changing mis PCS, that challenges of being on a flight schedule and having such limited time with your spouse and the effects all of those things have on home based businesses.
This past year Emily decided to homeschool her kiddos. We talk about that decision and what homeschooling looks like for them. Emily also shares an amazing program if you are a FL resident and homeschooling where you can get up to $8000/per year per kid in financial assistance!

We are continuing our holiday mil spouse business spotlight today with Ashlee who wears all the hats at Woman and Warrior Co which is a mil spouse clothing line.
Ashlee shares their very non traditional path to active duty. Her husband actually spent 12 years in the coast guard reserves before going active duty Army. She shares the ups and downs of that transition and how they are coping today with that decision.
We really go into a deep dive of starting and having to pause a home business because of military life. Ashlee shares how that “pause” actually turned out to be really beneficial in her business. But that those road blocks or hiccups can feel really big and insurmountable at the time.
I ask Ashlee to share with us what resources she tapped into to learn how to start and grow a shirt business. Watching and being part of her husbands small business, and sitting in on meetings and being privy to the internal going’s on was a HUGE insight. She also really dove into books. They can be our greatest teachers! Even if we are living in an isolated space, we can read and learn anywhere!
Some of the books Ashlee recommends are:
-Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kyosaki
-Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
-The Power of Broke by Damon John
-The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday
As entrepreneurs, your community, your village, is SO important. You cannot do it alone, and you don’t have to! Find your people!

Continuing our mil spouse holiday business spotlight, today we are talking to Sheri from Hartnett Homefront. Sheri makes the most beautiful wood art!
Sheri talks to us about her military life so far and navigating her nursing career with military life.
I know a lot of mil spouses think about health care jobs because they are everywhere! Sherri shares with us what she has done to keep her career while navigating motherhood and her husbands op tempo with the military, and the challenges that come with it.
We talk about being a per diem nurse and the challenges and ins and outs of obtaining licensure in other states every time you move.
Then we shift gears to talk about her woodworking business, how she got started, the challenges of a home based business when you have small kids at home. We talk about the products she makes, which are so beautiful! Make sure to check out her Spouse-ly shop for all her new holiday items!!
Shop small, shop local and support our fellow mil spouses this holiday shopping season!

We are kicking off our mil spouse holiday business series today with the creator of The Dainty Forces jewelry line, Navy spouse Erin.
Erin is currently stationed in Hawaii. We talked about being stationed there, and the best way to get your dogs on island without having to put them in quarantine. Which I know is a big factor in many military families not wanting to be stationed there.
Erin shared her job progression including the difficulty of finding a job in Hawaii and the lack of jobs specifically for military spouses. We face A LOT of job discrimination because of our lifestyle, it’s not legal, but it still happens all the time.
The Dainty Forces came from Erin’s love of jewelry and her desire for small but impactful pieces that held special meaning and could provide comfort when we are navigating challenging times.

Well, we finally got orders, and we are headed back to the PNW and the sub base Bangor.
This will be our 9th military move and our 2nd full DITY or do it yourself move.
I thought it would be helpful to share with you, in real time, the process I go through to prepare for and execute a full DITY.
9 months out, there are 3 things I am focusing on:
1-purge purge purge! Nothing is safe! If you haven’t used it since you unpacked from your last move, get rid of it!
2- Organize and simplify your organization, the more uniform you can make boxes and containers, the easier it is to load into the truck and store
3- Purge and pack well all holiday decor as the holidays come and go, then you have one less thing to worry about packing when you really start to pack out
I’ll be back in a few months with another update!

Today we are talking to interior designer Brittany, from Bleu Bee Designs. Brittany is what I call a “late in life” mil spouse, meaning she already had a home and career established before marrying into the military.
Brittany and her husband just completed their first PCS together from FL to WA. Brittany shares what she did in her interior design business PRIOR to moving to WA to help keep the momentum going.
She established relationships with local (in the new duty station) vendors who had similar clientele but not competing clientele. She started changing her SEO or search engine optimization about 4 months prior to moving to start getting her name into the local community. And also adding her new duty station as the geotag.
What does it look like to work with an interior designer? What does a virtual business model look like for that? What steps were put into place to help ease the transitions of moving with the Navy?
Best advice from Brittany is simplify how people are getting in touch with you. Have one place that acts like a funnel for people to come into your business, like a website form.
Then we switch gears and talk about the move itself. Giving yourself grace to adjust and taking the time OFF you need to get settled back in. Taking the time you need for your family dynamics to settle back in as well.
Moving a service based business isn’t easy but Brittany shows us how it is possible! To connect with Brittany….

I love sharing what I have been reading with you.
Today we are talking about the book Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima.
She is the founder and CEO of IT cosmetics. The company that was sold to L’oreal back in 2016 for 1.2 billion dollars!
We talk about the back story, it wasn’t from Denny’s waitress to 1.2 billion sale. There was 6 years of struggle in there.
My biggest takeaways:
I highly encourage you to pick up your own copy of Believe It or download it on Audible! Highly recommend for mil spouse entrepreneurs!

If you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or has disabilities, you may be able to get help paying for school or job training through the DEA program—also called Chapter 35.
We go over who is eligible!
Also a couple of REALLY important things to know about the GI Bill, especially if you are wanting to share your benefit with your spouse or kids!
Here is a LINK to the Chapter 35 page we talked about on the show.

We are continuing our homeschooling discussion this week with the host of The Military Homeschool Podcast, Crystal.
Crystal is an almost 25 year mil spouse veteran and has been in various stages of homeschooling her children for the past 23 years.
She shares with us why her family decided to homeschool, what she did to get started including choosing curriculum and how that evolved over the years.
We get into the nuts and bolts of homeschooling, like what does your school year look like, do you go year round? How do you determine what your kiddo needs to learn that year? How are you tracking grades and milestones?
What if you have different kids, with different likes and dislikes and learning styles, how do you manage all of that without getting overwhelmed?
What about records? How did you track grading and making a transcript? Where do you find out what to track and how to keep it all together?

Today we have the honor to speak with 23 year homeschooling veteran Natalie Mack.
Natalie and her husband felt the pull of is this the life we want for our kids? Running to school, working, picking up and being utterly exhausted to then go do it again?
Is there another way to parent and teach our kids?
We are going to talk about that and answer all of your questions like……
-I’m not qualified! I barely passed algebra myself, how can I teach my kids?
-What curriculum should I choose?
There was SO much covered today! If you have more questions feel free to reach out to Natalie!

Buckle in! We are learning how our guest Britnee Kinard started a service dog training non-profit from the ground up.
Britnee is back with us, be sure to check out episode 76, if you haven’t listened to that one yet, where Britnee shares their horror show of a
time trying to get VA benefits for her catastrophically injured husband.
Britnee is truly a force of nature and embodies the see a need, fill a need mentality.
She walks us through how the program was started, which was to provide financial assistance to veterans who need help caring for their
service animal.
After being contacted by countless veterans and first responders and parents, who were dismayed by the years long wait lists at most service dog organizations,
She started a training program.
Britnee is so generous in her information and the good and bad and growing pains of starting and growing a non-profit. From where do they get their dogs, what does the training process look like to how to procure funding.
If you have ever thought about starting a non profit or wanted to better understand service dogs and therapy dogs, this is the show for you!

Did you know that there is a such thing as high school stabilization for military kids entering into their junior or senior year of high school?
Essentially it is a program you can apply for, and each branch of service has different requirements and forms, but you can apply to NOT be moved while your kid completes high school if they are in their junior or senior year at your rotation time.
The more you know!

Cheating. No one wants to talk about it but we know it happens. Especially in military relationships, because long distance for extended periods of time, is REALLY hard.
Add to that the unique military dynamic where your significant other spends lots of time with other people in close quarters and you can see why it is so prevalent.
Not to say your significant other is going to cheat just because they are unaccompanied for a year or on deployment. Not everyone cheats!
So what do you do when you are concerned about it? Today we are talking about a post I saw in a mil spouse support group from a young mom who's husband is being sent unaccompanied to Korea for a year.
She's worried and doesn't know how to approach the subject.
I share with you what has worked for my relationship and that is COMMUNICATION!
Lots and lots of open communication!! What advice do you have for other mil spouses in this situation?

Today we are talking to retired Army wife Lissa about how we can be more effective with our time.
It begins with being aware of how you are actually using your time. Are you checking your email 30 times a day? Are you getting sucked into the Insta or FB scroll and all the sudden 2 hours have gone by?
Lissa tells us that step 1 of taking your time back is just simply being aware of how you are spending it.
Then ask yourself….I spend too much time ……… and not enough time…….. Fill in the blanks.
We put our time into what is important to us. To what we value.
When you identify the ONE thing that is something you want to work on. Make a plan and get someone to check in with you and make sure you are following through.
Again, just being aware of how you are spending your time is HUGE!

Today I am sharing with you a book I just finished called Mind Your Mindset by Michael Hyatt and his daughter Meagan. There is a lot of science in there about how our brains are wired and why we think they way we do.
And how can we challenge that inner narrator? What questions can we ask? How can we change our mindset around fears and life events?
I think the more we can learn about our brains, the better humans we can be. Understanding how our minds work can help us move much more smoothly through our day to day and especially as military families who face unique challenges.

We are in the middle of summer and you might already be losing your mind with your kiddos. Summer can be hard to manage sometimes with trying to keep everyone busy but also not driving yourself crazy with schedules and expectations.
I talk about Mother’s Day at the start and how we sometimes let expectations overtake our experience. We might find ourselves caught up in what you think you should be doing and enjoying with your family, when maybe you just want some alone time!
Giving ourselves grace to have the experience WE want to have. That might be taking your kids to the pool everyday while you read a good book in a lounge chair. It might be going out and having “adventures” everyday. It might be a quiet day inside. It should be whatever YOU want it to be. We need to let go of the mom guilt of maybe not having your kiddo in every summer camp and activity over the summer.
Taking a quiet moment either by yourself or include your kids if you want, to think about how you want your summer to go. How do you want to feel? What things do you want to do? And just managing expectations.
Stay cool my friends! 😎

Today we have the honor of having retired Army spouse Britnee Kinard on the show. Britnee has a really unusual story and path in their families military life.
In 2005, Britnee’s now husband was catastrophically injured by an IED in Iraq. Britnee didn’t meet him until 2008 and they were married in 2010. From the time they were dating, Britnee has been fighting a battle against the VA for her husband to receive the benefits he has earned for his service and injuries.
Britnee shares her, lets’ call them “adventures” in fighting for her husband’s rights and transforming her life to accommodate taking care of her husband and the ramifications of his injuries.
We then switch gears and talk about how to turn tragedy into triumph and the role their sons played in his continued recovery. Their son was diagnosed with autism at age 3 and the challenge of letting him know it’s ok to be different when Dad was still struggling to accept and talk about his own injuries forced a pivot for their family.
They adopted the Dr Suess saying, “You have to be odd, to be number one”. Changing the mindset of denial about his injuries to how can I get the therapies I need to show my son thats its ok to get extra help, was truly a turning point for their family and his care.
Britnee tells us about the program called CRSC which stands for Combat Related Special Compensation, which is funded and run through the DOD. Because her husband wasn’t treated properly immediately following his injuries in Iraq, he was eligible to kind of circumvent the VA process and receive care through CRSC.
If you are struggling with benefits with the VA and you have been deployed and seen combat while on active duty, you would qualify for the CRSC program.

What other options are there for veterans who need more or better care?
The Wounded Warrior Project
The Semper Fi Fund or America’s Fund
There is another great organization out of South Carolina called Hidden Wounds
Or google organizations in your area. If you hit a dead end with one of these organizations as them if they have a referral partner.
We then switch gears to talk about the SD Gunner Fund which is a service dog training non profit Britnee started when she saw a need that wasn’t being met. She is truly a FORCE! We didn’t have a ton of time to get into the specifics of starting this organization, so Britnee graciously agreed to come back and talk about it.

Today’s show is a little different topic. We are going to talk health and wellness and how to maintain that through a PCS.
We have Lizzie on today who is a nutrition coach and retired Navy wife. She is a published author with a really novel idea of looking at what is happening in our brains before tackling our health and fitness goals.
This episode is coming at the end of our PCS series and we are going to focus on how to stay on track with your health and nutrition even through a PCS.
Step one is that we know it’s coming right? So we can mentally prepare that we might not be eating and exercising 100% the way we want too and THATS OK!
Give yourself small goals that you know you can be successful at. Don’t set the bar too high, our brains need those little wins to be able to keep going!
Strive for imperfection consistently.
Give yourself self compassion, this is a hard season, and we are just trying to make it through. Self compassion is much for effective for our brains than self criticism.
Some tactical tips to keep yourself on track during a PCS:
-what are some quick dining options your family likes? McDonalds? Chipotle? Look for the healthiest thing on the menu and get that. Plan for those eating out periods
-again, small wins. What is one thing you can focus on? Drinking 60oz of water a day? Eating at least one veggie per day? Walking for at least 15 minutes per day?
keep it small to allow for those little wins everyday
Get to know Lizzie!

Today we are talking about preventing the summer PCS slide. Like the summer slide we all hear about, but adding the loveliness of a PCS on top of it.
Tips include:
-asking your kiddos teacher to make you a packet or give you online resources you could continue to use
-downloading books to tablets or iPads for easy access
- you can join your school or libraries summer reading program
here is the link to join the DOD/MWR summer reading program https://www.ila.org/dodsummerreading
- For math, flash cards for all student levels
-gas and food math
-map planning and trip route must see lists
I know summer is tough to keep school top of mind, we all want a break! Especially when we add a PCS on top of it all. But these are some cool ideas that could easily be implemented into your next move!

I am so excited for todays show! We are talking with Lindsay who is a language consultant. Coming in the end of our PCS series, I thought it would be a cool topic for those military families who might be getting stationed overseas this PCS season.
If you didn’t know it yet, the military does NOT provide any language services or learning for mil spouses. You are on your own! So what is the best method to become socially fluent in a new language as quickly as possible?
#1 is don’t panic! Lindsay shares with us her list of essential vocabulary, I’ll provide the link below as well. A lot of apps and programs start you off with the basics of the language, but thats not going to help you navigate through a city. Those essential or useful phrases will be much more helpful in the short term.
Lindsay also recommends listening to music or podcasts in the new language prior to getting overseas. Often times a new language or the sounds of it can be jarring. By exposing yourself to the language as much as possible prior to getting there, will make it a much smoother transition to the new language, and make you more comfortable.
If your looking for a deeper dive or to get more proficient Lindsay recommends finding a tutor or teacher and gives some resources for that or finding maybe another spouse heading the same way and starting a study group or just some extra accountability with another person, sometimes they might understand something before you do and can help you get it.

Today we are sitting down with Box Ops owner and army spouse Shea. Like most great products, Box Ops was born out of a pain point.
Military families are no stranger to moving, we are the experts! Shea took her nightmare moves and came up with a system to help streamline the process and make it as smooth as a move could possibly be.
We talk about moves, what things you really want to look out for like:
Shea offers some great things to watch out for with movers, like keep track of your weight tickets and make sure to look at the weight before they start offloading the truck in case the weight seems unrealistic. You are allowed to be present when the truck is being weighed, so you can ensure an accurate weight.
Finally we get into some of the nuts and bolts of being a small business owner. The challenge not letting your competitors out price you but having to measure that against the amount of work it takes so get the products ready and to ship.
Shea’s best advice to brand new mil spouses doing their first PCS:
The Box Ops moving system is great for DITY moves, military packer moves and especially overseas moves. The stickers really curb the language barrier. Just match the box to the room color!

Short and sweet this week. Next Monday is Memorial Day. Which we often look at as the kickoff to summer and cookouts and celebrations.
In reality, Memorial Day is a day for us, as a nation, to honor the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.
The Travis Manion Foundation has The Honor Project where volunteers go to military cemeteries across the nation, to pay respect and honor those veterans who might not have family or friends near to where they are interred.
For more information about this event visit: https://www.travismanion.org/events/the-honor-project/
If you aren't close to one of the event locations, I highly encourage you to seek out an event in your local area!

Today we are talking to all grown up military kid Chelsea. Chelsea grew up with both her mom and dad being active duty Army. Her mom transitioned out a few years after she was born, but her dad finished out a 20 year career.
Chelsea shares that she absolutely loved being a military kid and it truly helped form her into the successful adult she is today. She does share some of the challenges she had as a military kid and how they creeped over into her adult life.
Challenges with separation anxiety, OCD tendencies, compulsive need to be on time or early everywhere and how some of those have bled over into raising her own 4 daughters.
Some of the things that Chelsea had through her military life that have helped in her adult life are acts of service. Volunteering with veteran or military groups helps to keep you grounded to the mission and her mom always told her when you give, you get back so much more.
Letting our military kids know that we move a lot because of our lifestyle, but one day they will get to choose. And they can choose to stay in one spot for the rest of their life if they want, our lifestyle right now is temporary.
Military kids don’t get to choose their military lives, they are born into them. Giving them tools to help them cope and truly thrive as adults is what its all about!

We talk about the importance of having an education binder for your kids. What should be in it and do I really need it? Spoiler alert....YES!
How can we advocate for our military kids when we get to a new school? Who to talk to and what information is important to share?

This weeks episode is really personal. Michael has been on travel this week and this momma is at her limit!
We need to normalize talking about the overwhelm and stress of not only motherhood and everything that goes along with being the "default parent" but also the added stressor of being a military family.
I share my coping mechanisms and encourage you to reach out to a friend, or me, if you are struggling and don't have anyone to talk to.
Its ok to not be ok. Let's throw ourselves on heck of a pity party and then pick ourselves up, dust off, adjust our crowns and move on.

Today we are sitting down with retired army wife Stephanie to talk all things Space A travel.
I know Space A travel seems like a beast and you have probably heard horror stories, I have too! Stephanie is going to break it down into simple steps to help you understand how to make the most of this military benefit.
We cover:
-how flights work, and realistic expectations
-Identifying the closest bases with the biggest hubs to maximize you chance of getting a flight
-She goes through the process of sign up
-how to identify and track flight schedules
I’m not going lie, Space A travel is a beast! Especially if you are a newbie. I ask a lot of questions, because I’m trying to figure it out with you!
Stephanie then talks to us about lodging when you finally arrive at your destination and getting a rental car when you arrive on a base. She has a great resource for this on her website!
We talk about how to plan your trip home and when to do that. If you can’t afford to fly commercial, you can’t afford to fly Space A. You always have to be prepared to fly commercial if you are unable to find a military flight home.
Stephanie shares her best tips to travel comfortably and be ready for any flight conditions, again, she has great resources on her website including travel essentials and pack lists!
When you have arrived at your location, Stephanie shares how to plan your excursions or events using the local base MWR or ITT offices and how to find them.

Today we are talking to veteran army mil spouse Lissa. After 26 years of service, her husband was suffering from PTSD.
Lissa is really open and honest with the toll it took on her and their marriage and finally reaching out for help, despite her husband’s initial reluctance.
Lissa shares who to reach out to if you or your spouse is hurting. PTSD is a silent enemy, and its wreaking havoc on so many lives and we need to talk about it more.
The book Understanding and Loving a Person With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by Steven Arburn has been a valuable resource for her.
We then shift gears to talk about the organization called Fight Oar Die. The organization has a couple of programs and scholarships it supports but the main event is the Talikser Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. Which is a 3000 mile rowed passage across the Atlantic.
Fight Oar Die sponsors an all veteran team of 4 individuals who train and work together to complete the crossing which usually takes between 33-75 days!
Another resource Lissa wanted to share about PTSD is the book When War Comes Home: Christ-centered Healing for Wives of Combat Veterans

Today we are talking to the founder of Brave Crate, Becky Hoy.
Becky is a 12 year mil spouse veteran who discovered through multiple deployments that just surviving and counting down to homecoming wasn’t how she wanted to live this season. She found creating routine to be super beneficial.
When her friends started having challenges with deployment Becky found herself sharing these resources and thought, what if I could get this to as many mil spouses as possible? And Brave Crate was born.
Becky walks us through her practice of determining what is important during the season of deployment and how can you set up your day to support that and create routines around those goals.
She shares the other benefits to Brave Crate which is a Facebook community of other like minded mil spouses going through the same season as you are. Becky also shares the pillar deployment retreat which is held every fall for 3 days and is a totally free online event. Check it out at pillardeploymentretreat.com
Just a friendly reminder that you are not alone. It’s ok to have bad days, it’s ok to reach out for help. There are resources for you out there! Brave Crate might be the boost you need to make it through this season.

We are diving into all things life insurance today. I know this isn't a super fun topic to talk about but it is incredibly important to set yourself and your family up financially if something were to happen to you.
Topics covered include:
- SGLI and FSGLI, who gets it and coverage amounts
- transitioning from SGLI to VGLI and the rules around that
- private insurance and the difference between whole life and term life policies
- pros and cons for whole life vs term life
- the Survivor Benefits Program or SBP, who is it for, what does it pay and is it worth it?
We talk a lot of numbers and examples and I hope you find it helpful in navigating your insurance needs.
As stated in the show, I am not a financial professional, this is my knowledge, experience and research. Please seek the counsel of a financial professional when determining your insurance and financial needs.

We briefly talk about the organization Blue Star Families and how it differs and what their mission is.

Happy New Year!!
It seems crazy that its already 2023, but here we are!
I wanted to share with you today some of the things I like to do to reflect on how the past year went and how I want next year to go.
I tell you about a journal I just recently purchased and the goal setting masterclass that came with it. You can check out the journal at jennakutcher.com
It seems like everything is on our phones these days, including all of our photos. One of the things I started a few years ago was making a family yearbook.
Its so fun to look back through the year of pictures and remember events I totally forgot about and get them printed out in a hard copy for the whole family to enjoy.
Its truly a labor of love, but totally worth it in my opinion to have those memories to easily look back on.
I wish you the best new year! Remember that goals for the new year for you may be taking things OFF your plate, not adding more things to do. Protect your peace!
Until next time.....

Continuing on with our holiday gift giving ideas, we chat today with Wendy Hively who is the founder and owner of Charlie Madison Originals.
Wendy and her family served 20 years in the Navy before retiring back in 2007 but we look back briefly at what their military lives looked like then. And touch on how challenging career continuity was and still is for mil spouses.
Wendy shares how she founded Charlie Madison Originals, which is named for her daughters. They make the most beautiful bracelets and they tell a story which I love.
Being part of a family with 3 generations of hero's across multiple branches of service, is what inspired them to create an uplifting community of fellow military families, whose common bond and shared experiences remind you that you’re not alone on your journey.
Their military jewelry collection inspires you to tell your unique military family story as you grow through each season and transition of military life - from deployment to PCS, celebrating a veteran, honoring a fallen hero, and showing pride for your milspouse tribe.
Having a personal and meaningful everyday reminder to slip on your wrist each morning empowers you to focus on what matters most and reassures you that you’re part of a community who understands that your sacrifices as a military family matter – that you matter!

Welcome! Today we are talking about establishing residency as a military spouse. It is a total pain in the butt to change your residency every time you move. I get it!
The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act amended the Service Member's Civil Relief Act which enabled service members to establish a state of residency where they choose, which they are allowed to keep regardless of orders sending them to another state.
What the means for mil spouses is that you may also share your service members home state of residency or where you are currently stationed. It makes it a little easier, but maybe not.
We also get into the tax implications for mil spouses and touch on the challenges of voting in different states. I hope you enjoy as we continue to learn more about the crazy military life we lead!
As always, I so appreciate you listening to the show!

If you have been looking for a great resource for all things mil spouse related, you need to check out A Military Wife's Life blog! She has so many free resources and info on everything from military acronyms to navigating Tricare to branch by branch rank cheat sheets.
Sarah starts off telling us about her military life so far, how her blog came to be and the other items she makes that are base specific.
The main reason I wanted to have Sarah on the show was to share the resources she has developed around Tricare. We are now in open enrollment and I thought it was timely to dive into our healthcare a little.
We keep it pretty simple talking about enrolling into Tricare initially, the different types of Tricare offered. How to find your first doctor and then Sarah shares the most frequently asked questions she gets and resources she shares the most.
To connect with Sarah you can go to her website or connect with her on IG @amilitarywifeslife

Today I am getting really raw with you guys. I recorded todays episode in real time after an incredibly emotional morning with my daughter missing her daddy.
I share with you the tools we have and do use to help her cope, how sometimes just talking about it doesn't help.
How to have grace with yourself as a parent to navigate these emotional eruptions while still managing your own emotions and responsibilities while single parenting.
Finally I share with you the next steps we are going to try to help our military kid cope with lots of separations.
Here are links to the tools I talked about in the show:

If you didn't see it, on September 22, the DoD released a document titled:
They talk about 4 major areas of concern:
BAH/PCSing/TLE (all related to housing and moving for non military member ;)
child care
military spouse career assistance
commissary funding
We get into all of it in more detail, but those are the big topics. If you haven't seen the document, you can read it here
I am curious to hear what you think. My opinion is that its a start, but we are still woefully behind our civilian counterparts.

Todays's show is timely, because I am spending this week in Orlando hitting all the Disney parks with my family!
I sat down with Disney travel specialist and fellow mil spouse Hannah Little and we get into all things Disney!
We start off with her military life so far and how she found herself being a travel agent, specializing in Disney vacations and the portability of the career as a mil spouse.
We talk about the new Genie Plus system and how it differs from the old school fast passes. Hannah shares her favorite parks and hotels. She shares how to save money as a military family and why you would want to use a travel agent vice booking everything on your own.
Hannah shares strategies for different parks and we talk about the merits and uses of lightening lanes. And we talk about the value of the special events like the Not So Scary Halloween Party and the Christmas special events and how they have military discounted tickets, and they never sell out!
If you have a trip to Disney on the horizon for your family, you aren't going to want to miss todays show!

It was my absolute pleasure to have fellow Navy spouse and lawyer Michelle Mance on the show today.
Michelle shares her path to becoming a lawyer and navigating that over time and moves and deployments.
We end up spending some time talking about Michelle's time as Ombudsman on her husband's ship during covid and a 9 month deployment.
The mental stress of deployments and reintegration that was only compounded by covid.
We talk about the emotional stages of deployment and allowing grace and space for what each of you have gone through during your time apart.
Then we dive into being a lawyer as a military spouse and the licensing and process of moving your business to a different state.
Michelle tells us about MSJDN or military spouse JD network (msjdn.org) an organization of military spouses all in the law field and all over the world.
She tells us about her practice specifically and why you might need more than Navy Legal or your branch equivalent to that.
We talk about special needs trusts and why they are needed and important.
Why estate planning is important when you are younger! When you have small children!
And finally taking the seasons to grow when you can.
It was such a blast getting to connect with Michelle and I hope you reach out to her as well! She is an absolute wealth of knowledge!
Michelle practices law in California and Washington, so if you are in those areas, reach out!

Today's show might seem a little random, but if you know me, you know I am a huge animal lover. Any excuse to talk about animals, I am going to take it! September is service dog appreciation month, it is also suicide prevention month.
I think most of us have heard the alarming statistic that 22 veterans take their lives everyday. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
On todays show we are going to talk about military working dogs briefly because they do some really amazing stuff! Most of which you will never hear about.
And finally we are talking about service dogs being matched with veterans suffering from PTSD, TBI and sexual assault. How dogs are improving the lives of these suffers and what you can do to help!
As always, thank you for listening!

Wrapping up our mil spouse podcast series, today I am talking to Erin who is the host of the Life After The Uniform podcast. Erin isn't a mil spouse, but is active reserves and I thought the topic of transitioning out of the military is a HUGE milestone and change, and I think Erin's podcast is a wealth of information!
Erin shares her top issues she has seen or heard from military members when they are transitioning out, like VA benefits and medical, GI bill benefits and how you incur a 3 year service commitment when you transfer them to your spouse or kids!
We talk about getting your finances in order and being prepared for the change in pay and instability that can come with job hunting when transferring to the private sector.
I hope you find lots of value from this episode and from Erin's podcast. Please email me and let me know if you want me to dive deeper into anything we talked about today!

Continuing with our mil spouse podcast spotlights, I am talking this week to Britt who is the host of Moments with a MEO podcast.
We get really personal on a lot of different topics, from wanting to hide being a mil spouse because of not wanting to fall into the stereotypes. To deployments and reintegration and the challenges those put on a marriage.
We talk about having those tough conversations about what your military career looks like when planning for kids and just the emotional toll deployments can take personally and on your marriage. Britt shares their decision to go active reserve, which is an option a lot of mil spouses might not know about!
Britt talks about starting her podcast and the journey it has taken her on personally and what it looks like today. And we talk a lot about being a mil spouse entrepreneur. Britt’s whole business is based around supporting mil spouse entrepreneurs and she is brings on guests to her show to talk about all the different aspects of being an entrepreneur.

When I first started my podcast I couldn't find any other mil spouse podcasts! Since being in the space, I have discovered there are quite a few!
Clearly we have a dissemination of information issue! I thought I would take the month of July to connect you with other mil spouse podcasts so you know they are there, and what they talk about.
Today I am talking to Natalie Gross and Andrea Scott who host The Spouse Angle Podcast. Natalie and Andrea are both former military brats and come from long lines of military service.
Their podcast aims to bring relevant news stories military spouses. They have touched on some really important topics to military families like family planning and what we need to know about the war in Ukraine.
I hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as I did!

As always, I am so excited to share this weeks episode with you!
I am sitting down with Marine Corp wife, mom of 4 boys and family photographer Alison Bell.
We get into all the things!
We talk about moving a small business over and over and over.
We talk about homeschooling 4 boys, why they chose to homeschool and what programs they used.
We hit on the challenges of having an in person business, and what it takes to move it.
This one gets a little personal with talking about the identity loss of being a mil spouse, the feelings of wanting more for ourselves, and contributing to our families financially.
Hold on tight! We are all over the place on this one but thats life! I hope you enjoy!

I had such a blast talking today with fellow mil spouse Kayla Lyon!
Kayla has such an interestingstory in that she was active duty navy for 6.5 years, her husband is also active duty.
We talk about the tough conversations and decision to get out of the military to start a family.
She shares her struggles with identity and bouncing from job to job until she found the right fit. I think we can all relate to that one!
Then we get into life coaching, what the heck is it? Is there a certification for it? What makes you qualified? Who needs it? And we take a deep dive into common struggles military spouses face and how Kayla can help.
I throughly enjoyed this interview and hope you do to!

I've talked about on the show before how important I think personal development is. Being a mil spouse is not an easy job and anything we can do to understand ourselves better, in my opinion, is only going to make us better spouses, parents and friends.
On todays episode, we are diving in The High Five Habit by Mel Robbins. I've read and listened to lots of her books and she knows how to deliver the straight talk!
We talk about how negative self talk affects the body. The science behind the high five habit and how you can implement it into your life. Thanks for checking it out!

Ever wondered just what the heck is an Instagram influencer? Me too!
On todays show, I interview mil spouse, momma of 4, blogger and IG influencer Sandee Booth. We get into everything from their military career, how she started her blog, learning to monetize it and then the transition to IG influencer.
I had zero clue what was involved in being an influencer and Sandee was gracious enough to walk us through it step by step and really lays out there the reality of being an influencer.
We also touch on raising 4 military kiddos, the challenges of changing schools and home schooling 4 kids while working from home! So much great content, I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for tuning in!
As we round out April, which is the month of the military child, I wanted to do a book review of sorts on a resource Shaye recommended in her interview at the beginning of the month.
The Whole Brain Child by Daniel Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD is such a wealth of information on how our kids brains grow and process the world around them.
We are going to get into the actual anatomy of the brain and how it develops to help us understand why our 3 year old is losing their flipping mind over not having an orange popsicle.
There are so many techniques in this book to help us understand our kiddos and connect with them on their level and help them grow their brains into become awesome little humans. We don't have time to talk about them all, but we are going to hit the big ones! Lets go!

As a military family, one of my biggest fears is how our crazy, chaotic, unpredictable lifestyle affects our kids.
On today's show, I am talking to Meaghan Sniegowski, a military kid, all grown up.
Meaghan was born into the military and travelled all over the country with her family while her Dad pursued his career as a Navy pilot, having just retired last year.
We talk about what she remembers from growing up military. Challenges she remembers and the benefits of being raised in the military. And how her upbringing has formed her into the person she is today.
It was a fascinating conversation and honestly it made me feel a whole lot better about how our lifestyle affects our kids!

As we continue to celebrate the month of the military child, I thought it would be fun to interview my 10 year old daughter, Savannah, for her take on our military life.
Savannah was born into the military and our military lifestyle of moving every 2-3 years is all she has known.
We talked about the negatives and positives of being a military kid. She shared some things she does when she is having a hard time adjusting to moving or Daddy being gone.
I loved this conversation we had and it was really eye opening what things stick out to her and don't stick out to her about our lifestyle. Please share with your military kid!

I sat down today with fellow mil spouse Calli.
Calli is fairly new to the military life. We talked about life as an active reservist, I had no idea what that was!
Her experience so far with deployments, moving and integrating into military life.
We also spoke about her business, Innate Nutrition. Calli specializes in women’s health and more specifically painful periods.
We talk about things to look out for, and how to advocate for yourself.

I love that this podcast has given me the opportunity to talk with so many different military spouses. I like to do military spouse spotlights because career continuity with our crazy military lives is not easy!
On todays show I am talking with Broadway actor Dani Spieler! I ‘met’ Dani on Instagram and was dying to hear her story, because I mean BROADWAY!!!
We get into all the things….
Marrying into the military later in life
Prioritizing your career and what that looks like
Integrating into military life both as a spouse and the military member
The struggles of settling into a new duty station that you know is only very short term
How do you maintain a career as an actor with military life
It was such a great conversation and I can’t wait for you to hear it!

I am really excited to share this book with you this week!
We each ‘speak’ different languages when it comes to emotions.
What language you speak, may differ from your spouse.
Military life is hard, and military marriages endure different types of hardships from traditional marriages, like Deployment and separations.
We are going to go over the 5 love languages, small things you can do for your spouse from each language and the unique scenarios military couples face.
Marriage is a choice. We all want to feel love and supported and be in a fulfilling relationship. Lets figure out how we can nuture our marriages and thrive!

I am so excited to share this weeks episode with you!
I found Valerie in the Lost During My PCS Facebook group where she was sharing about her disaster move and a cool idea on how to track your shipment.
I reached out to her to talk about it for the show and learned that she also published a children's book called The Christmas Spoon and is the CEO of Property of Mrs Clause.
We talk about her book, how hard it is to have a small business and move constantly. The intricacies of re-starting a business in a new state and the drive you need to have to keep pushing forward.
Finally we talk about her last move, which was a total nightmare! You're going to want to hear her story so you can make sure the same thing doesn't happen to you!
Check out Valerie's book here:
