The Warrior's Journey

The military experience creates challenges most people don’t understand. And while there are many great organizations helping heal the physical wounds of battle, it’s often the invisible wounds that go unrecognized. The Warrior’s Journey exists to connect warriors with warriors to help heal those invisible wounds. Each week, we’re having conversations with military thought-leaders, service providers, and warriors with personal stories of healing. They not only recognize these invisible wounds but offer advice and services for helping overcome them and for finding true resilience. In cooperation with other military partnerships, foundations and nonprofits, The Warrior’s Journey is able to present a wide range of resources that cover the unique challenges that warriors and their families face, both downrange and at home. Episode 148 • Stand Up for Heroes

On January 29, 2006, Bob Woodruff was reporting on the transfer of power between US and Iraqi security forces for ABC’s “World News Tonight" when his armored vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. Life for Bob and his entire family changed in an instant, as he sustained a life-threatening traumatic brain injury.

Bob spent 36 days in a medically-induced coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his wife Lee got to know the families of service members dealing with the impact of hidden injuries such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression.

As Bob recovered, the experience inspired the Woodruff family. They resolved to ensure that our nation’s impacted veterans, service members, and their families have access to the highest level of support and resources they deserve, for as long as they need it.

In this episode, we're joined by Dave Woodruff, brother of Bob and co-founder and Chief Development Officer of the Bob Woodruff Foundation, where he unpacks the history and mission of the Foundation, which invites people to stand up for heroes by helping our impacted veterans, service members, their families, and their caregivers thrive. Episode 145 • Healing What's Hidden

Trauma is the root cause of suicide, and the existing solutions aren't working. Addiction, poverty, sexual abuse, divorce, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide are all directly correlated with trauma exposure. The U.S. spent $458 billion last year to treat these comorbidities of trauma, and the VA spent an average of $4,100 per person for treatment of PTSD.

Trauma may be spreading, but so is hope.

If trauma is our personal intersection with the brokenness of the world, then recovery is our personal intersection with the redemptive heart of God, and REBOOT Recovery is helping people overcome trauma so they can embrace a brighter future.

REBOOT delivers healing from trauma that actually works.
At REBOOT, people are introduced to the redemptive heart of God through trauma healing courses and online community – at no cost for military and first responder programs.

With nearly 300 course locations spanning 34 states and 7 countries, REBOOT Recovery is the largest peer-led trauma healing program in the world.

Founders Evan and Jenny Owens have been at the forefront of the faith-based trauma healing movement, working ceaselessly with churches and community leaders to help bring about lasting change.

In their new book, Healing What's Hidden, they shine light on the many pathways where faith and trauma intersect, and they guide you through practical steps to reframe your trauma as a productive – rather than destructive – part of your life.

Episode 143 • Honor, Hope & Healing

As we continue to highlight our partners in the Veterans Service Alliance, a group of non-profit organizations coming together to make a global impact in the fight against veteran suicide, we're shining the spotlight on Engage Your Destiny, led by CEO Ben Peterson.

Ben spent 8 years in the Army, deploying to Iraq during the surge in 2008. His time in a Combat Aviation Brigade was challenged by fellow soldiers killed in action, suicide, and tragic civilian casualties. After battling post traumatic stress, alcohol dependency and family issues, Ben turned to his faith, community, counseling and recreation to recover from the traumatic experiences of combat. The power of Ben’s story is his ability to bring authenticity and honesty while breaking down the of core principles of resiliency.

In the beginning of 2016 he felt the call to start a mission to help veterans and their families heal from their experiences. This call led to the fulfillment of a vision Ben had to bring honor, hope and healing to Vietnam Veterans, as 35,000 people gathered at the Daytona International Speedway in May of 2022 for the Heroes Honor Festival. 10,000 Vietnam Veterans were welcomed home, 1,200 enrolled in PTSD programs, and hundreds more found healing.

Episode 142 • Get Up!

Continuing our series with other members of the Veterans Service Alliance, a group of non-profit organizations coming together to make a global impact in the fight against veteran suicide, we welcome Vice President of the Roever Foundation John Arroyo (USA, Ret) to the podcast!

John, a 20-year Army veteran, joined the military because he needed a change and felt the military would help him find control of his life. He expected to complete three years, gain a skill, and go home, but the Army had different plans for him. John became a Special Forces Green Beret and highly decorated officer after completing three combat deployments (two to Afghanistan and one to Iraq) while serving his country.

After returning from his final deployment, he was assigned to a medical unit at Fort Hood in Texas. On April 2, 2014, while he was on duty, a service member went on a rampage shooting 19 service members, including John who was shot in the neck and nearly lost his life.

He hopes to use his scars and story to help anyone in need from taking their life and to be a living testament that there is hope and a future no matter your situation. John and his wife, Angel, currently live in San Antonio, TX where they both work at the Roever Foundation. In January 2020, John published his first book, Attacked at Home: A Green Beret’s Survival Story of the Fort Hood Shooting.

Founded by renown Vietnam Veteran Dave Roever, the Roever Foundation exists to create pathways for those who feel lost and hopeless to find their way home. More information about the Roever Foundation can be found at https://www.roeverfoundation.org/

Episode 141 • Returning Healthy Veterans to America

As we kick off a new series highlighting partner organizations, we welcome Major General Bob Dees (US Army, Ret.) back to the podcast, who serves as President of the Board for the National Center for Healthy Veterans.

Our veterans have pledged their lives for our freedom, security, and prosperity. Healthy veterans are productive members of society, good employees, and positive role models, but not all of our veterans are healthy – more veterans have committed suicide in the past 10 years than the number of combat deaths in the Vietnam War. Our veterans need America, and America needs healthy veterans.

The National Center for Healthy Veterans is a comprehensive scalable solution and a unique strategic initiative that will have national impact and return healthy veterans to America.

Bob served thirty-one years as an infantry officer, a senior military leader and strategist, and Commander of the 2d Infantry Division in Korea, and the US-Israeli Combined Task Force for Missile Defense.  Following the military, he served in business at Microsoft, in non-profit leadership, and in academia as a VP for military outreach at Liberty University and founder of the Liberty Institute for Military Resilience.

In 2015 and 2016, he served as national security advisor and chairman for Dr. Ben Carson's Presidential Campaign. Bob has authored five books including the Resilience Trilogy and the Resilience God Style series. He was also featured as one of 30 “Master Leaders in America” by noted author George Barna and was awarded the Council for National Policy George Washington Military Leadership Award in 2018.

Episode 130 • Thank You For Your Service?

Sgt. Blake Leitch (USA, Ret) joins the podcast once again, this time to talk about the significance of Veterans Day, and what sets it apart from other holidays honoring service members.

The common civilian response of "Thank you for your service" seems like a nice gesture, but often rubs veterans the wrong way. Why? And should it? Blake and The Warrior's Journey's Kevin Weaver share their perspectives on this as veterans themselves, as well as some helpful tips for civilians who want to show their appreciation and advice for veterans in how they can more effectively respond and spread awareness.

Episode 124 • Nothing Is Wasted (feat. Pastor Rob Ketterling)

Were two hard-fought decades in Afghanistan all for nothing?

As a veteran, how do I respond to the loss of peace I fought so hard to protect?

As an American citizen, how can I honor and support those who have sacrificed and suffered so deeply to protect and provide 20 years of peace?

In this episode, Pastor Rob Kettering joins the podcast to encourage warriors in the aftermath of the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan, and to share from personal experience and investment how other church and business leaders can offer their support to military veterans and their families.

Being the son of a military sergeant, Rob's dream was to be a Navy pilot. He didn't make it past the screening - slight color blindness stopped the dream at the start. Led down a different path, Rob's faith led him to the Amazon jungle basin to serve the poorest of the poor. Sleeping in the rainforest under a mosquito net, Rob heard the call from God to be a pastor and to focus on reaching the world with good. After attending bible school, Rob became a pastor and eventually founded River Valley Church in an elementary school in 1995. Under Rob's leadership the church has grown into a thriving church with nearly 10,000 in attendance across its eight U.S. campuses. In addition, the church under Rob's tenure has given away over $45,000,000 to outside organizations and relief efforts all around the world, including The Warrior's Journey.

Episode 118 • Soul Survivor

What started as a routine assignment for Lt. Col. Rick Wolf (USMC, Ret), leading a Wounded Warrior Detachment, eventually became the spark that ignited Soul Survivor Outdoor.

When Rick arrived as the Officer in Charge of the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Detachment at Marine Corps Base Twentynine Palms, it was evident that there was more going on with the Marines assigned to the unit than the physical and emotional wounds of war. The Marines of the detachment had both emotional and physical wounds from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, medical and psychological care alone was not fully addressing the damage to their souls.

That is how Soul Survivor Outdoor – an organization that exists to serve active duty military through outdoor adventure and a relationship with Jesus Christ – was born.

In this episode, Rick shares about his personal military experience and tells the story of Soul Survivor Outdoor, which began in 2014 as an outdoor wilderness program for the Marines of the Detachment and conducted an event in Joshua Tree National Park. Events focus on building or re-building a solid life foundation, gave military service members a chance to relax and let their guard down, unpack the stress of daily life, refresh their spirit, clear their minds, re-build confidence in self and others, and ultimately provided an opportunity to restore their souls. Today, these events take place in various locations with an incredible reach and impact.

Chad Robichaux (USMC, Ret) knows a thing or two about fighting. From jiu-jitsu mats to the battlefields of Afghanistan, Chad achieved incredible success as a Marine and MMA fighter. Despite all the fame and acclaim, it wasn't until reaching the end of his rope battling PTSD and a broken marriage that he found wholeness and purpose – not in fighting, but in surrender. Now, he has dedicated his life to help others do the same, and vulnerably shares his powerful testimony in a conversation with Kevin Weaver of The Warrior's Journey.

Chad is a former Force Recon Marine and DoD Contractor with eight deployments to Afghanistan as part of a Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) Task Force. After overcoming his personal battles with PTSD and nearly becoming a veteran suicide statistic, Chad founded the Mighty Oaks Foundation, serving the active duty and military veteran communities with highly successful faith-based combat trauma and resiliency programs.

Chad is also a 3rd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and former Professional Mixed Martial Arts Champion having competed at the highest levels of the sport, and now a bestselling author of six books related to veteran care donating over 100,000 copies to the troops during his resiliency speaking tours. Episode 105 • Reflections of Vietnam: A Snapshot in Time (Part 2)

We're back for Part 2 of a conversation between Kevin Weaver of The Warrior's Journey, photographer Lloyd Smith, and veteran Bill McGee as he reflects on his experiences in Vietnam.

On Jan. 17th, 1969, Bill McGee was 10 months into a deployment in Vietnam when his life changed forever: during a battle in the Ben Cat district, he jumped out of his armed personnel carrier directly onto a land mine. The explosion cost him one of his legs, and after receiving the last of three Purple Hearts during all the action he had endured, Bill was sent home and received an artificial leg.

Like so many Vietnam veterans, Bill didn't receive a hero's welcome, but a feeling of rejection as he reintegrated into American society, only adding to his pain. However, through embarking on a journey of faith and learning to share his story, Bill discovered healing and wholeness.

During Bill's time in Vietnam, he took hundreds of photos with a Kodak 126 Instamatic camera. Half a century later, over 800 of those photos have been brought to life thanks to a partnership with friend and avid photographer Lloyd Smith. The photos and the response to them have helped speed up his emotional healing process and serve as a reminder of a pivotal time in his life.

Episode 101 • Surviving Combat And The Scars It Leaves Behind (Part 2)

This week, we welcome back Captain Jeff Morris (US Army, Ret.), who shares even more of his incredible story of tragic loss and trauma, and ultimately his journey to health and wholeness. While the scars of trauma never go away completely, we can have a game-changing perspective that allows the pain of our past to propel us forward, rather than hold us back from living life to the fullest.

Jeff Morris is a former Infantry Officer in the United States Army, serving two deployments to Baghdad, Iraq as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander. After retiring as a Captain, he was instrumental in establishing a non-profit organization for veterans, serving as a board member for Farmers Assisting Returning Military, created to assist veterans suffering from PTSD. He also established his own non-profit, Legion 8 Foundation, designed to honor the lives of the eight men lost under his command and provide educational benefits and mental health counseling to those families and other service members and families of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Jeff speaks to different veterans groups and other organizations sharing his story of adversity and leadership and the power of never letting circumstances dictate what they are capable of in life. Jeff is fearlessly transparent and honest about his personal journey, something that has captured the hearts of people from all walks of life. He is dedicated to allowing his story to be used for good, carrying a message of hope and rising beyond life’s greatest challenges.

Episode 99 • Fighting on the Battlefield and the Homefront (feat. Tom Satterly of Delta Force)

As a senior non-commissioned officer of Delta Force, Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly fought some of this country's most fearsome enemies. Now, he sits down to share his story with The Warrior's Journey!

Over the course of twenty years and thousands of missions, Tom became a legend even among other Tier One special operators. Yet the enemy that cost him three marriages, and ruined his health physically and psychologically, existed in his brain, and the fallout from his battle with PTS nearly led him to kill himself in 2014.

With the help of his wife, Tom learned that by admitting his weaknesses and faults, he sets an example for other combat veterans struggling to come home. He has since embarked on his most important mission: saving the lives of his brothers and sisters in arms who are killing themselves at a rate of more than twenty a day.

In Tom's words, "You have to be vulnerable to be courageous" – and he encourages listeners to lead with love, not fear.

Rick Kell, Co-founder and Executive Director of Feherty's Troops First Foundation, is back to continue the conversation with Kevin Weaver and Dan Boever, this time diving deeper into the foundation's approach to help warriors discover closure and healing from their experiences in battle.

Troops First Foundation was created to develop, operate and support wellness, quality of life and event-based initiatives for post-9/11 combat-injured Warriors. Their initiatives provide housing to wounded veterans and their families, establish valuable connections among service members to give them a critical support network in an effort to combat the veteran suicide crisis, coordinate a unique opportunity for service members to leave the battlefield on their own terms, and provide service dogs to assist in everyday life.

Episode 93 • Troops First (Part 1)

Troops First Foundation was created to develop, operate and support wellness, quality of life and event-based initiatives for post-9/11 combat-injured Warriors. These initiatives facilitate a greater recognition and an enhanced understanding of the quality and character of the men and women who volunteer to serve, their families, their daily sacrifices and the constant need to evaluate and improve their quality of life.

In this episode, Troops First Foundation Co-founder and Executive Director joins Kevin Weaver and Dan Boever for a two-part conversation about the history and heart behind the foundation.

Shortly after visiting deployed troops in the Middle East with a group of college basketball coaches in the summer of 2005, Rick Kell received an invitation that would change his life.

A Warrior Care Liaison at Walter Reed Army Medical Center asked Kell to visit several OEF and OIF patients recovering from serious combat injuries. After multiple visits, many friendships were forged. These friendships cultivated a strong desire to provide meaningful assistance on a larger scale.

Over the next two years, Kell gained invaluable insight into the landscape of Warrior Care and used it to create concepts for new programs. Throughout this development phase, close attention was paid to a belief that new initiatives needed to be very relevant and without duplication.

Upon sharing this information with friend and passionate advocate for our troops, David Feherty, the two co-founded Troops First Foundation and incorporated as a non-profit organization in August of 2008.

In this episode, Kevin Weaver and Rob Stone sit down for a candid, vulnerable, and sometimes uncomfortable conversation about something that is universally experienced, but rarely brought out into the light of day to be unpacked: sexual struggles and sin.

Pornography has never been more accessible, and we live in a world that is driven by a perverted understanding of sex. The reality is, sexuality goes way beyond the physical–it's matter of the heart, and our indulgence in it outside of God's design can leave emotional and spiritual scars that stick with us for a lifetime.

But, there's hope! No matter how strong sin's grip may be on our hearts, the power of God's work in our lives is stronger, and He is able to heal us and set us free.

Episode 63 • Interview with LTG Jerry Boykin (Part 2)

In this special two-part interview, Kevin Weaver sits down with Lieutenant General Jerry Boykin (US Army, Ret.) for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation. In his thirty-six years in the army, LTG Boykin also served a tour with the CIA.
