Leading With Heart

Prioritizing self-care and work/life balance can feel impossible in the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" and "embrace the suck" military culture. It's time to change the narrative - together! The Leading With Heart podcast is your go-to resource for how to find happiness, peace, and true success amidst the high demands of military life. With research-based tools and expert interviews, these episodes will change your life. Join host Christina Mattison as she teaches you the skills and mindset needed to take excellent care of yourself, so you can prevent burnout, take excellent care of your people, and shift the culture around self-care and well-being in the military.

Core values are your compass

Have you ever felt stuck, unfulfilled, or on the edge of burnout, wondering if this is really what life is supposed to look like? I’ve been there. And the turning point for me came when I sat in my car with my first life coach and did a simple core values exercise that completely changed the trajectory of my life.

In this episode of Leading With Heart, I’m pulling back the curtain on how uncovering my values helped me walk away from a job that was draining the life out of me, build a business aligned with what matters most, and prevent burnout before it takes over.

Core values aren’t just a “nice to have.” They’re your compass. They give meaning to your work, confidence to your decisions, and resilience when life feels heavy. And when you align with them, you stop chasing someone else’s definition of success and start creating your own.

Whether you’re leading yourself, your family, or your team, this episode will show you how values-based living can transform the way you show up every single day.

In This Episode:

Why values conflict is one of the leading causes of burnout
How identifying your values gives you confidence to say yes or no without guilt
The story of how a single exercise led me to quit my job and completely shift my career
Practical ways to uncover your top values and use them as a filter for decisions
How values-based leadership deepens connection with your team, your family, and yourself

Anchor Into Your Core Values

What really drives you? What lights you up and makes you feel aligned, and what leaves you drained and disconnected?

In this week’s episode of Leading With Heart, I’m diving into one of the most powerful tools for self-awareness and leadership: anchoring into your core values.

I share my own story of the first time I did a values exercise, and how it was a complete wake-up call. I realized that so much of my life was out of alignment with what truly mattered to me, and no wonder I felt unhappy and stuck. That moment gave me language for my inner world, and everything shifted.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why naming your core values is like turning the lights on in a dark room
How living in alignment creates freedom, clarity, and confidence
Why understanding the values of others transforms the way you lead at home and at work
Simple, practical ways to identify your own values and use them as a compass for decision-making

This is more than a “self-help” exercise, it’s a tool to ground you, guide you, and elevate the way you show up in every area of your life.

And if you’re ready to go deeper, we’re exploring core values all month long inside the Lead Your Life App. You’ll find journaling prompts, practices, and community support to help you put this work into action.

Because when you know your values, you know yourself. And when you live by them, you lead with heart.

Why I Built the Lead Your Life App (and Why It’s for You)

For the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside women in the military community, helping them prioritize self-care, strengthen resilience, and become powerful advocates for themselves. What started as an online yoga community during the pandemic has since blossomed into retreats, workshops, challenges, and the Strong and Resilient Women Facebook community.

But I’ve always dreamed of something more, something consistent, accessible, and designed as a true one-stop shop for wellness and self-leadership.

In this special episode of Leading With Heart, I’m unveiling my biggest project yet: the Lead Your Life App.

Built specifically for women in the military community—service members, veterans, retirees, and spouses, this app is not just another wellness download. It’s a purpose-driven space where you’ll find:

Monthly missions designed to keep you focused and consistent

Bite-sized tools that fit into real-life schedules

A supportive community of women who get it

Meditations, journaling prompts, self-paced courses, and live events that meet you where you are

This episode is both a behind-the-scenes look at why I created the app and an invitation to join a movement of women who are rewriting the story of what it means to care for themselves first.

If you’ve ever struggled with guilt, inconsistency, or feeling like there’s no time for you, this episode will show you a new way forward.

Becoming the Woman I Envisioned: Audra Carpenter’s Story of Healing, Strength & Identity

Some journeys change us so deeply that we can hardly recognize the person we used to be. That’s the story of today’s guest, Audra Carpenter.

Audra first joined me on the podcast two years ago, at a time when she was simply trying to survive. Since then, she’s walked through the fire of inner work, healing, and transformation, and has emerged stronger, braver, and more herself than ever before.

In this conversation, Audra opens up about her journey from survival mode to thriving. She shares how community, self-forgiveness, therapy, and even the courage to face her deepest fears have helped her rewrite her story and truly step into the identity she once only dreamed of.

We talk about the power of envisioning who you want to become, what it looks like to do the hard work of healing, and how every small step forward builds a foundation of confidence and self-trust. Audra’s story is raw, real, and a reminder that transformation is possible for all of us.

If you’ve ever felt stuck under the weight of shame or wondered if you could really become the woman you aspire to be, this episode will give you hope, courage, and practical insight into what’s possible when you refuse to give up on yourself.

In this episode:

  • Inspiration to face your own “I did it” moment
  • A deeper understanding of how community and support change everything
  • Encouragement to keep moving forward, even when it’s hard

This is an episode you’ll want to come back to anytime you need a reminder that growth is always possible.

Interrupt the Pattern [Week 4] - Making Your New Patterns Last

If you’re waiting to feel like the woman you’re becoming before you act like her… you’re doing it backwards.

Welcome to the final episode in our 4-part “Interrupt the Pattern” series, where we close the loop on what it really takes to shift your habits, beliefs, and identity, for good.

This week, we’re talking about identity-based change and why it’s the key to lasting transformation. We’ve spent the last few weeks recognizing the patterns that no longer serve us, learning how to pause and interrupt them, and replacing them with new behaviors. But this is where it “sticks”

Inside this episode, I’m sharing:

  • How to anchor your new habits in the identity of the person you’re becoming
  • A journaling prompt that will rewire your brain and reshape your life
  • A sneak peek at the Lead Your Life App launching September 8th!

Small shifts. Repeated often. That’s how you become her.

Interrupt the Pattern [Week 3] - New Pattern New Programming

We’ve named the pattern.  We’ve practiced the pause. Now it’s time to rewire.

In this episode, I’m sharing the real-life next step in our “Interrupt the Pattern” series, and it’s the part where true change begins. Because awareness is powerful, but action is what rewires the brain.

I get a little personal in this one and open up about a pattern I’ve been working on in my own life, how it shows up, what I’ve learned from it, and what I’m choosing to do instead. (Spoiler: It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it.)

Together, we’ll talk about:

  • Why your brain resists change, and how to work with it, not against it
  • How to uncover the real need hiding behind your old habit
  • How to name a new behavior that supports who you’re becoming

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being aware, and learning how to interrupt the loop and choose a new path, even when it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

So take a deep breath, tune in, and ask yourself: What do I want to do instead?

Interrupt the Pattern [Week 2] - The Power is in the Pause

Ever find yourself stuck in the same frustrating loops, overcommitting, spiraling into self-doubt, or working yourself to the edge of burnout, and wonder why you keep doing it?

It’s not because you’re broken. It’s because you’re wired that way. But here’s the good news: your wiring can change.

In this powerful kickoff to our July series, I’m talking about the habit loops and mental patterns that run our lives on autopilot, often without us even realizing it. Drawing from habit science and real-life examples, I explain how your brain is simply trying to protect you… even if the patterns it’s built are no longer serving you.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why we repeat patterns we know are unhealthy
  • How your brain creates, and clings to, habit loops for survival
  • Why self-awareness is the most underrated tool for change
  • How to shift from judging your patterns to witnessing them with compassion

This isn’t about fixing yourself, it’s about finally seeing yourself clearly. Because once you see the loop, you can interrupt it.

The Leadership Lies that are Burning Us Out

We’ve been sold a version of leadership that’s breaking us.

In this fiery, unfiltered episode, I’m calling out the leadership lies that are burning brilliant women out, especially in the military world. From the glorification of hustle to the pressure to be everything to everyone, we’re unpacking the toxic systems that were never built for women like us… and talking about how to lead differently.

This isn’t just a vent session, it’s a wake-up call and a personal invitation to stop performing your worth and start reclaiming your peace.

We’ll dive into:

  • The roots of burnout in military and mission-driven leadership
  • Why the “first in, last out” mindset is not sustainable (or admirable)
  • How to start unlearning the hustle and rewriting the rules
  • What leadership can look like when you lead with breath, boundaries, and your whole self
  • A powerful permission slip to protect your energy and redefine success on your terms

This episode is raw, honest, and from the heart. If you’ve ever felt like you’re holding it all together but losing yourself in the process… this one’s for you.

You don’t have to lead like everyone else. You get to lead like you.

Energy Management Pt. 4

Welcome to the final episode of our 4-part mini-series on energy management! If you’ve been with me from the beginning, then you’ve already learned how energy influences your leadership, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We’ve talked about energy zones, how to restore what’s been depleted, and what to do when burnout looms.

In this powerful closing episode, we’re bringing it all together.

You’ll learn how to build your personalized energy system, a repeatable rhythm that supports your leadership, protects your peace, and honors the human behind the mission. We’ll walk through a 4-part framework rooted in the science of habit formation, inspired by Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Energy isn’t just something you have, it’s something you build. And systems, not willpower, are the key to sustaining it.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to:
- Build a personal energy rhythm that works with your natural flow
- Align your tasks with your real-time energy levels
- Design micro, meso, and macro recovery rituals that actually recharge you
- Create protective systems and beliefs to sustain your energy long-term
- Shift your identity from “pushing through” to a leader who honors her limits

The Problem with No Problems with Brooke Brzozowske Pt. 2

You don’t have to have all the answers to be a powerful leader, but you do need to create space for better answers to emerge.

In this inspiring continuation of our conversation, Brooke Brzozowske and I go deeper into the internal experience of leadership, the fear of not knowing, the pressure to perform, and the courage it takes to stay grounded in presence rather than perfection.

Brooke shares how reflection, vulnerability, and emotional self-awareness can radically shift the way we lead ourselves and others. We also dive into her own bold career transition as she leaves federal service after 20 years to pursue purpose-aligned entrepreneurship full-time. Her story is a beautiful reminder that leadership is just as much about who you're becoming as what you're doing.

If you've ever felt like you're juggling it all and still questioning if you’re doing enough, this episode will leave you feeling seen, inspired, and equipped to lead from a deeper place of truth.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why vulnerability can build more trust than always having the right answer
  • The importance of self-awareness and reflection in leadership
  • How to navigate transition in a way that aligns with your values
  • Why curiosity is the antidote to burnout, judgment, and stagnation
  • The powerful difference between performing leadership vs. embodying it

The Problem with No Problems with Brooke Brzozowske Pt. 1

What if the most effective leadership isn’t about always having the answers… but about being bold enough to create space for the real problems to surface?

In part 1 of this 2 part powerful conversation, I sit down with leadership communication coach Brooke Brzozowske, founder of Up Until Now Coaching and a seasoned federal leader with decades of experience navigating complex organizational change. Together, we discuss a common leadership mindset that many of us have heard (and maybe even said): “Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions.” And we explore why that approach might be doing more harm than good.

Brooke shares how our obsession with quick fixes and polished answers can cause us to miss the heart of what’s actually happening in our teams. Through curiosity, courage, and intentional listening, she reveals how leaders can create trust-filled environments where real conversations thrive and real progress is made.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why the “only bring me solutions” mindset can limit real leadership
  • The difference between performing leadership and living it
  • How curiosity creates space for deeper trust and innovation
  • The value of asking better questions, especially when problems feel messy
  • How to create a culture where unfinished ideas are welcomed

Listen in and challenge your default approach to leadership, it might just transform how you show up, and be sure to stay tuned next week for part 2 of the interview to wrap up this conversation!

Unlocking Success Through Feminine Energy with Isabel Churchill

In this episode of Leading With Heart, I’m sitting down with Isabel Churchill, a military spouse, former senior project manager, and now a master Reiki teacher and global mentor with over 3,000 active students. Her journey from clinical psychotherapy and government leadership in Canada to running her own holistic healing business is full of insight, wisdom, and radical transformation.

We’re chatting about what it means to lead with feminine energy, not as a gendered concept, but as a powerful skillset rooted in compassion, intuition, and collaboration.

Isabel shares her personal story of divorce, rediscovery, and starting over, how losing everything she thought she was became the catalyst for building something more aligned, authentic, and successful than she ever imagined. As a military spouse navigating frequent moves and identity shifts, Isabel’s resilience and heart-centered approach to leadership is nothing short of inspiring.

We also explore:

  • The difference between masculine and feminine energy in leadership (and why you need both)
How soft skills like compassion, gut instincts, and collaboration are actually power skills
  • What it looks like to lead without the title—and why it matters
  • Isabel’s biggest lessons in self-worth, healing, and doing the hard things scared

Whether you’re leading a team or simply trying to lead your own life with more intention, this episode will open your heart and mind to a new way of defining success.

Energy Management Pt. 1

In the high-demand, always-on lifestyle of the military, burnout can feel inevitable. But what if there was another way to approach it?

In this first episode of a powerful 4-part mini series, I’m talking about energy management, a smarter, more sustainable way to navigate stress, prevent burnout, and take better care of your mental and physical well-being.

Drawing from my recent experience speaking to the 823rd RED HORSE Squadron at Hurlburt Field, I’m introducing the idea that it’s not about constantly operating at 100%, it’s about learning when and how to protect your energy so you can lead effectively, live intentionally, and stay grounded through the chaos.

Whether you're active duty, a military spouse, or a leader in any high-stress environment, this episode offers a fresh, empowering framework for showing up with more clarity and less burnout.

Listen in to start managing your energy, not just your time, and join us for the next few weeks as we go deeper into this essential series.

Who Do I Need to Become in 2025?

As we step into a new year, it’s tempting to dive headfirst into resolutions, to-do lists, and ambitious goals. But what if there’s a better way to create lasting change—one that starts from the inside out?

In this mini-episode of the podcast I’m challenging the traditional “task-based” approach to goals and invite you to explore a powerful mindset shift: Instead of asking “what must I do to be happy, healthy, and at peace”, ask “who must I become?”

This episode is a reflective, action-packed exploration of identity-based change, where I walk you through

- Why starting with your identity—not just habits—creates real transformation.

- How to align your goals with your values and the person you want to become.

- The importance of letting go of external pressures and embracing what truly matters.

Exposing the ‘Do-It-All’ Myth: How Ambitious Women Are Finally Reclaiming Their Peace and Sanity with Roshonda Thomas

What if the greatest strength you could show wasn’t pushing through the pain, but learning to pause, slow down, and seek support?

In this impactful episode of “Leading with Heart”, I sit down with entrepreneur, Army Reserve officer, yoga teacher, and mother of four, Roshonda Thomas. She’s a living testament that “doing it all” doesn’t have to mean running on empty. Instead, it can mean caring for your mental health, setting priorities, and giving yourself permission to recalibrate—even when it feels like the world expects otherwise.

Roshonda opens up about her journey in the military, her family life, and her entrepreneurial ventures—all while managing a demanding schedule and a spouse with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Through it all, she’s learned the art of honest self-evaluation, boundary setting, and prioritization. She shares her strategies for making white space on a packed calendar, the importance of shifting out of “superwoman” mode, and why it’s okay to seek help, rest, and stillness.

If you’ve ever felt like you should be able to handle it all on your own, or if the idea of taking time for yourself feels like an indulgence you can’t afford, this conversation will challenge those beliefs and offer tools to guide you toward a more sustainable, balanced, and fulfilling path.

Self-Compassion as a Motivational Tool

What if the key to staying motivated wasn’t pushing yourself harder, but treating yourself kinder? In this mini episode of Leading with Heart, we flip the script on traditional “tough love” approaches and explore the transformative power of self-compassion. Inspired by Dr. Kristin Neff’s groundbreaking work, we’ll look at why gentler, more supportive inner dialogue can actually help you reach your goals—without the anxiety, shame, and burnout that come with self-criticism.

In this episode we will:

  • Uncover how to harness self-compassion as a powerful motivational tool, one that activates your mind’s soothing system and allows you to think clearly, take healthy risks, and embrace challenges with patience.
  • You’ll learn practical techniques—like reframing negative self-talk, celebrating progress over perfection, and using simple mantras—to stay committed and confident, even when the journey gets tough.

If you’re ready to break free from the cycle of pushing yourself into action out of fear, and instead cultivate a growth mindset built on understanding and care, this episode is for you.

Redefining Exercise and Self-Care Interview with Taylor Hester

This week I have an inspiring episode with Taylor Hester. As a military spouse turned certified personal trainer and wellness advocate, Taylor shares her unique insights on the intersecting worlds of fitness, nutrition, and mental well-being.

Taylor is chatting about the everyday struggles and triumphs faced by individuals, especially those in the military community, as they navigate the balance of health and self-image. Her story of transformation, from a teacher to a business owner amidst her husband's deployment and personal health challenges, is so motivational!

Taylor challenges the fitness industry's obsession with before and after photos, debating the impact these images have on our collective mindset. Through a unique approach to coaching that encourages self-discovery and practical nutrition, Taylor's mission to forge a path to holistic well-being is truly compelling. Listeners, prepare to be moved, educated, and empowered to lead with heart.

Setting Healthy Boundaries: the Key to Work/Life Integration - Interview with Sharon Arana

Discussing boundaries can be challenging, yet it is crucial for our mental well-being and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Paradoxically, those who stand to gain the most from establishing boundaries are often those who struggle the most to communicate these limits.

Sharon opens up about her unique journey as a woman, a single parent, and a first-generation Latina in the military. We are talking about the crucial role of setting healthy boundaries for work-life integration, self-care, and burnout prevention, particularly in high-stress environments like the military.

Sharon also advocates for equitable military policies and offers practical advice on introspection, mentorship, and valuable resources for boundary setting, including Melissa Urban's "The Book of Boundaries." Lead Your Life - the Path to Empowered Self-Leadership

Are you “playing the game”, chasing someone else's definition of success? Welcome to another episode of the Leading with Heart Podcast! In this episode, I am sharing my transformative journey from feeling lost and at the mercy of the military to discovering the power of self-leadership. Drawing from my military experience, I reflect on the burnout and disconnection that arose from chasing others' definitions of success. My post-military identity crisis led to the creation of the Lead Your Life, a coaching methodology designed to empower women, especially those in military leadership, to lead intentional, connected, and fulfilling lives.

The process consists of five phases, focusing on identifying goals and setting up your systems, building your self-awareness and understanding of your inner operating system, breaking down the mindset barriers that are keeping you trapped, nourishing your 4 wellness domains, and healing your relationship with YOU. We’ll chat about the importance of community support and coaching support on your journey. If you are ready to dig deep and “Do the Work” in order to become the Leader of your Life, then buckle up and press play!

Harness Imposter Syndrome as Your Superpower with Alani Bankhead

Did you know that your biggest weakness can be your guiding light to your most powerful gifts? Today I am joined by the incredible Alani Bankhead to chat all about Imposter syndrome.

Alani Bankhead is an ICF-certified professional coach, TEDx speaker, best selling author, and owner of Mighty Sparrow Coaching LLC. Through workshops, speaking events, and private coaching, her company is focused on helping individuals and teams crush their imposter syndrome and achieve fulfilling lives and mission outcomes previously thought unattainable. Alani gained this passion during her 20-year career where she hunted spies, terrorists, and human traffickers around the globe as a supervisory special agent. She is now committed to ensuring no one suffers the way she did by guiding heart-centered, high-achieving professionals to understanding that their weakness is actually the key to unlocking their greatest power.

'Imposter Syndrome' is a psychological pattern (that affects 70% of the population)  of doubting one's abilities or accomplishments and harboring persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome begins with acknowledging and recognizing the negative feelings associated with the 'imposter syndrome', followed by bringing curiosity about these feelings, and reviewing past achievements as evidence of competence.

Alani provides some amazing information today about imposter syndrome and why the things you think are your weaknesses, are actually guiding lights to your greatest strengths. Today we will dive into how to transform the feelings of self-doubt and discovering your gifts.

Trusting Yourself Through Understanding Your Parts - Interview with Coach Chrissy Marie

Today I am joined by MY coach Chrissy Marie! Chrissy is an embodiment coach who helps high achievers let go of people-pleasing and perfectionism and find joy in their lives. Her coaching incorporates inner child healing and the Internal Family Systems model to foster trust and communication among different aspects of oneself.

Today Chrissy dives into common parts that her clients often struggle with: the fixer, the perfectionist, the protector, the pleaser. Chrissy believes that when we get to know and understand our inner community, we are able to come home to our inner, wise Self - where we embody curiosity, compassion, contentment, confidence, and clarity.

Chrissy will encourage you to look inward and appreciate each part of yourself. She leads us through a powerful exercise on how to do this called “Airing Out the House.” This exercise will help to promote self-compassion, eliminate shame, and connect to your higher self.

Interview with Dr. Kati McNamara

Today on the Leading with Heart podcast I am interviewing Dr. Kati McNamara.  Dr. McNamara is a social worker, behavior change expert, educator, and researcher in the U.S. Air Force. She currently serves as the Director of Behavioral Medicine and Uniformed Services University Assistant Professor in the Family Medicine Residency Clinic for the 99th Medical Group, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. "When Warzones Come Home" - Interview with Eli Gardner

Eli Gardner is an award-winning author and military veteran who has been deployed 13 times. Eli experienced a lot in her 13 military and civilian deployments and wants to be a voice for others who experienced the same things that she did.

Eli is passionate about being a voice for veterans and conveying the emotions and realities of military life through her art. Turning trauma into something beautiful is possible and Eli encourages everyone to use the experiences they have been through for the greater good and to create beauty out of it. Those experiences are what you are meant to share with the world.

Eli will read two poems today from her book Hookah Smoke and Hellfire: Poems from War (The Desert War Collection): "Time Warp Lounge" and "Message in a Bottle.”

As humans, when we experience trauma or uncomfortable situations we tend to stuff those feelings and emotions away into a box. Today we discuss how you can only put so much into a box before they need to be dealt with. Over the past few years, Eli has finally had time to think, process, and heal which is when her books and poetry were born. Eli’s words are a powerful reminder of the beauty and pain of the military experience.

Investing in Yourself with Lt Col Angie

Today I am so honored to be joined by Lt Col Angie Stephens! In this episode, Angie shares her journey on finding her authentic self. She felt that she had created the persona of someone she “thought” she was supposed to be. This hustle after a persona that wasn’t aligned to her values led to serious burnout.

Angie is a C-130 navigator by trade, and has spent time in both the Special Operations and IG communities. She loves paddleboarding and driving her jeep, and is a proud Texas Aggie! Today, Angie is sharing her story of how she finally made the decision to start investing in herself and her self-care. It wasn't easy, but she's embraced 1% progress and imperfect action along the way. Listen to this episode for an honest conversation about self-discovery and authenticity.

In the working world, women often build walls and wear facades in order to be competitive and “fit in with the guys.” Tired of pretending to be someone she wasn't, Angie shares about her realization that living for others doesn't lead to true happiness or fulfillment. Her mission became breaking free from this pattern and live as her authentic self all the time.

Join us for this empowering episode as we explore Angie's journey to self care on the “Leading with Heart” podcast.

What do you NEED? It's Not That Simple!

Are you meeting your own needs? Do you know what meeting your needs looks like for you? In this episode of "Leading with Heart," I share the importance of identifying and meeting your needs. Unmet needs can lead to negative emotions like exhaustion, anger, resentment, or anxiety. I’m going to help you start identifying your needs by sharing useful tips for identifying which areas of your life are thriving and which areas you may need to look deeper at. I’ll also provide a handful of resources to help you along the way. I’ll be sharing how to use Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to do a “needs inventory” exercise. We can also use reverse engineering to uncover unmet needs. You’ll leave this episode with some tools to learn more about yourself and start advocating for your needs!

Identity Based Change - The Inside-Out Approach

This episode has the potential to blow your mind and change your life. This concept has revolutionized the way I set goals, develop habits, and pursue personal growth. Today, we are talking about Identity-Based Change. In this episode, you’ll learn what it is, how to implement this transformational inside-out approach in your life, how to apply it to behavior change, habit building, and goal setting.

I first learned about this concept of identity-based change in the book Atomic Habits by James Clear where he introduces the “three ring circle” to explain the three layers of behavior change - outcomes, systems, and identity. When we shift away from outcome-based change and we start leaning into identity-based change, it strips away the noise and opens your path for meaningful, long-lasting change.

In this episode we will dive into determining the person we want to be and how we can ultimately get there.

Service Before Self - Interview with Brig Gen Brenda Cartier

Brig Gen (Ret) Brenda Cartier has lived "Service Before Self." She understands this Air Force core value's origin story, and has experienced the healthy AND unhealthy sides of it.

The military is a machine, and will take everything you're willing to give it. But Service Before Self wasn't intended as service at the sacrifice and detriment of self.

Brenda, a recent graduate of Christina’s Lead Your Life program, has been on her own journey of self-care over the last year. She's learning that your SELF must be loved and cared for in order to be of highest SERVICE.

Today, I have the honor of interviewing her on the TRUE meaning of Service Before Self.

In today’s episode we discuss:

  • Understanding the difference between when it's time to sprint vs conserve energy
  • How to "lead up" within your organization to promote a culture of balance and well-being
  • Her advice on how to not lose yourself and identity within the military machine
  • Finding a "sustainable and humane power setting" for your career
